Stepping up your game: Fangirling in Korean

Word: 빠수니/ 빠순이 / 올수니/ ~수니

빠순이 means fangirl/girl who stans an oppa. It came from the word “오빠” and “순이”. “순이” is a common ending of korean girls’ names. Originally, this word doesn’t have a positive meaning and meant someone who would drop everything just for their oppa a.k.a. crazy fan but as time went by, it gradually became a word to describe typical fangirls just like the word “stan” (correct me if i’m wrong but from what I know “stan” also had a negative meaning).

빠수니 is just a more casual spelling of 빠순이.

올수니 means you stan all the members of a certain group. From the english word all (올) and the word 수니 (순이) again. Ex. 안녕하세요, 저는 세븐틴 올수니입니다. Hello, I stan all of the Seventeen members.

~수니 - You paste this to the name of your bias. Ex. 저는 쿱올수니입니다. I stan S.Coups/I am S.Coups biased.

However, it can create a misconception that you only stan one member so instead of just “*insert bias name*+수니” I advice you all to say “*insertbiasname*+올수니

Ex. 저는 쿱올수니입니다. I stan S. Coups and all of the members as well.

(As you can see I used 쿱 and not 에스쿱스, simply just because it would sound more casual and for me, it sounds so idk sweet? hehe but that’s just me, you can use your bias’ real name for example: 순영수니 = Soonyoung stan)

The male version of 빠순이 is 빠돌이. (Always remember that this is a word commonly used by teens)

Word: 오덕후, 덕후, 오덕, 씹닥, 입덕, 탈덕, 덕질

오덕후: fan/stan It started from the word “otaku” which koreans describe as those who are a fan of something usually anime, computer games etc. Instead of 오타쿠, koreans spelled it as 오덕후. Like the word 빠순이 it also had a negative meaning but is now being commonly used by teens as to describe a fan/stan.

덕후/오덕: just an abbreviation or more slang term for it. *You might be familiar with 오덕 because of the show 5ducks. The show’s title is a play on words since 오 can mean 5 and 덕 can be heard as “duck” and when you put it together it means a fan.

씹덕: a more hardcore fan Since the word 오덕 had the word “오” which means 5. They replaced the 5 with 10 (십) to describe a more hardcore fan and eventually turned it into 씹 to stress it more.

입덕: to enter a fandom From the word 입 (入) which means entrance and the word 덕후.

탈덕: to leave a fandom From the word 탈출 which means to leave, and the word 덕후

덕질(하다): to spazz
