I've always had some kind of problem with The Goldfinch movie and now i finally know what was bothering me.
Okay so 1st thing that I think is the biggest problem but also really simple is that it is really hard to understand what's going on, what film is about and just is hard to understand sense of this film without reading the book previously. Even from my own experience, I watched the film first and understood NOTHING (but I also watched it at a young age so it might be also a reason here), but when I finally started reading the book suddenly all of the pieces started to settle. Even the plot in the movie is hard to understand, everything is just really fast (but also slow at the same time?) and chaotic - which is to be honest understandable when I think about it right now, because even the book is based on Theo's thoughts and not exactly on some kind of actions or plot twists, but I still think in a movie plot wasn't just explained enough.
Second thing that bothers me about the film is how characters are showed. While watching the film every time I felt like Theo is emotionless, which comparing with the book is just not right. I agree he had problems with expressing his emotions, but he was grieving, he still was full of them. I said it once and I will say it once again - The Goldfinch is all based on Theo's thoughts, feelings, pain, loneliness and in a film i feel like it wasn't showed enough. I would even say it almost wasn't showed at all. I think in a movie we can see his loneliness, drug use and problems with expressing emotions which are showed as their lack (except some scenes of course like for example taxi scene in Las Vegas).
Yeah so i think the goldfinch is really hard book to turn into a movie, because of the plot being pushed by Theo's thoughts and trying to work out his trauma all by himself, and not exactly by some actions (excluding some plot twists of course). I think the movie had a really big potential but was done like a normal movie which caused my disappointment - I just don't think that The Goldfinch is the type of story to be presented/filmed that way.
i hate when goldfinch fans complain that Theo didn’t actually get together with Boris is vegas.
like there’s a reason for that, the whole book/movie is about him getting over the trauma of his moms death and generally what happened in the museum. he couldn’t have gotten together with Boris because he wasn’t there mentally yet, he couldn’t process caring about someone like that at that time. he went off wishing he said ‘i love you’. it’s an important part of the story they never actually got together
