Garroth and Gene are both using Zenix as a stand-in for their own little brothers, but Zenix is such a personality that he carves out brand new categories of relationships in their lives. In Garroths case as a son and in Gene's case as the 14 year old coworker he considers his mortal enemy

What if maybe Zenix went "mad with power" because he grew so close with Garroth because he was just so kind to him and couldn't handle it. He's a Shadow Knight he's not supposed to have emotions anymore. Why does he care so much when Garroth doesn't do more than grunt at him because he's having a bad day. Why does he want to hear him tell him how excited he is with how far he's coming along in his training.

Similar to Laurance's crashout in S2 I think Zenix got far too attached to Garroth, and did the whole Shadow Knight thing of "violence and hatred is my fucked up love language" and Garroth not seeing that him attacking the village was because he cared so much made him run off, trying to understand these intense emotions he's not supposed to have anymore and it leads him to go a bit crazy
