Request: "Dustin x very shy and extra nerdy reader!!! he flusters her on accident and doesn’t even notice till she is a blushing mess 🥹🫰 tysmm"
Hiii! Thank you so much for my first request!!! I wrote the reader as nerdy in the fandom way rather than the maths and science way even though the reader is also said to be very intelligent so I do hope that's okay! If you wanted something different from this fic I can totally do that too so don't worry about asking again (..◜ᴗ◝..)
Context: Set in 1988 (I completely did not remember that season 5 was 1987 and not 1988 so pretend I totally got my research right and Starbase Indy started a year earlier, thanks guys ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ) pre-season 5 around April, Reader is unaware of the upside down
Warnings: Reader is a trekkie fujoshi
"Does she even talk?" Is a phrase that's followed you your whole school life. People didn't exactly bother you often but they stared, they giggled to themselves within their little cliques and made you feel... Outcasted. The social aspect of school was a struggle for you but at least you knew one person who was always there to cheer you up, your boyfriend.
Dustin dropped his books down in front of you, snapping you out of your usual day dream. "What's up? You uh... Still conscious there? Not that it would matter, you could pass the MCATS asleep." Similar to you he hadn't been having a great time in school. You'd see how guys would push him around and threaten him right in the middle of the hallway, yet minutes after those assholes tried to rip him apart he'd walk into class and like clockwork he'd give you a smile and a compliment. You truly wished you could do something to help but nothing would change even if you tried. They'd blow you off, question why you were even speaking to them and as always you'd get scared.
"Yeah, sorry I just- I got distracted." You couldn't help the way your blood rushed to your face or how it heated in a manner you didn't experience with anyone else. Before Dustin you assumed romance wasn't on the table. In movies girls like you are put to the side or only deemed attractive once there's the inevitable makeover scene where she walks into school and everyone turns there heads no longer in repulse or pity but in admiration. You used to think you needed that, needed to change yourself, needed the whole school to realise they were wrong for treating you poorly, for ignoring you. That want faded with Dustin. He would show you consistently how much he valued you, how special you were to him and you'd much rather have that over superficial idiots inviting you to parties you wouldn't even enjoy. You truly hoped he could feel all the appreciation you had through how you smiled at him, sweetening it for his comfort.
Class passed as usual, writing your notes in a my little pony notebook Dustin picked out for you, the occasional glance between you two and packing everything into the backpack you'd owned for years once class ended. Walking to the cafeteria was filled with you two's usual chatter about the upcoming release of video games, dnd and particularly today the newly finished first season of star trek the next gen.
"I know Kirk is the original but Picard, and I know it's still the first season, just seems a little more charming. Obviously it's not gonna capture the magic of the original but I say if we give it some time it could turn out really good. What do you think?" Dustin sat himself down next to you on a lone table. You tended to sit alone but having Dustin being there was always fun. Despite the disagreements with his little group lately he commonly seemed to feel this pressure to sit with them. He felt visibly guilty about telling you he had to sit with his friends without you. You understood of course, he was allowed to sit with his friends but he acted so strange about it. Sometimes he wouldn't even talk to them or actively argue but completely stopped and started wildly jotting things down the moment the radio turned on. You always thought it was strange but you assumed that group was just really big fans of Rockin' Robin.
You hummed to yourself in thought about your own opinions on the new star trek. Honestly it wasn't as good but the first season never is.
"I miss Spock and Kirk a bit." You shrugged and spoke between bites of the the lunch you packed this morning. After a while of stuttering your order to the lunch ladies Dustin reminded you that you just didn't have to do that shit and could get your own stuff. More and more you applied that to other things too. Dustin's attitude did impact you in small ways like how you felt more comfortable being independent or exploring new things even if it was as simple as choosing your own food every morning or wearing your hair a different way. He seemed so sure of himself even when he truly wasn't and didn't care what people thought of him, it was rubbing off on you bit by bit.
"Do you like 'The premise'?" He replied to your complaint with a smirk. He watched you freeze.
"Excuse me?" You couldn't help the anxious laugh that escaped you as you spoke. There's no way he new that phrase. Last month you and Dustin had gone to a Star Trek convention named "Starbase Indy" and while you two were separated you may have come across someone selling some fanzines with some un-conventional art and fiction inside. That's a polite way of saying borderline intimate artistic displays of Captain Kirk and Spock. You weren't apposed to it, to put it lightly. You put yourself on the list to receive later issues of said fanzines and bought a couple before shoving them into your pin adorned bag at the familiar voice coming up behind you. In a flustered state you rushed Dustin into a prop building room to make sure he got so distracted he wouldn't ask about what he likely saw you shove into your bag. You assumed it had worked until now. Asking someone if they liked "The premise" in the Star Trek fandom was a secret way of worming out the Kirk and Spock shippers. You hadn't even heard of it until the kind lady at the fanzine stall taught you, how would he know? It was likely just a misunderstanding on your part.
"Uh- I enjoy Data so far I guess..." You truly had more to say about next gen but you were a little rattled at the idea of Dustin knowing about your interest in shipping in general, especially those two.
"You know that's not what I mean." He looked delighted to bring this up while you were horrified.
"Look, those fanzines weren't what you think they are!" You quickly attempted to defend yourself, falling over your own words in the horror of realising that Dustin totally knew what you bought that day.
Dustin shrugged his shoulders and spoke in that squeaky tone you recognised from when he was either lying about borrowing your dnd dice or defending himself when you soon after found said dice. "C'mon! It's adorable! I love that you're a little geek like me! It's not an issue to me that you like to look at two guys making out." At least he had the manners to lower his voice so no one else would hear your guilty pleasure.
"That's not-! Oh my god..." You hid your face in your hands, your voice coming out in a weak whine of defeat. Dustin noticed your genuine distress over something he assumed wasn't that big of a deal. He cooed at your bashful behaviour as he put his hand on your back to reassure you.
"Hey, c'mon, I don't mind." His voice was honeyed for you, softened to not even risk making you feel worse. Teasing was all fun and games, especially when you got so adorably sheepish, but he knew when to stop pushing despite the smile on his face. "I didn't think it was a big deal, I'm sorry hun."
He watched you raise your face from your hands, his eyes flickering down how your velvety lips were lightly pouted before going back up to the way your pupils dilated and how the light reflected off the stunning colour of your iris's. PDA wasn't big with you two, you disliked the attention it brought but he couldn't help briefly pressing his lips to your forehead and you couldn't help the smile that grew in response to it. You couldn't help the playful annoyance at him. "You're such an asshole, Dustin."
Little notes from me! I watched a video about Kirk x Spock for this and found out that the fanfics tropes of sex pollen, the idea of people having mating seasons/heats and fuck or die was all from the og Star Trek! Also, they made the first fandom conventions! How awesome! On another note if anyone has any constructive criticism for my writing I'd really appreciate it! Thank you all for reading <3
you'll say something as simple as "no child deserves to be hit" and people will crawl out of the woodwork to explain why they should be allowed to beat a 6 year old for spilling some water
you'll say "i think it's weird that adults literally have control over when children are allowed to use the bathroom" and up pops a teacher to say that when they're not shouting at the kids they teach, they're trying to stop them from hiding in the bathrooms
you'll say "i think children shouldn't be forced to eat food they hate" and here comes someone who feeds their kids plain rice and boiled chicken (while eating a nicely seasoned stirfry) claiming that it's okay actually and kids shouldn't be allowed to taste things
you'll say "i think kids should have bodily autonomy" and in comes someone who pierced their babies ears before it was even 24 hours old, frothing at the mouth because their kid wanted a haircut and thats somehow an insult
children are an oppressed class and everyone should be looking back at their own childhoods and making sure they don't ever make a child feel the same way they felt.
