Back in the day anyone who committed a crime in movies was punished. They could be eaten by a monster, killed some other way, and/or arrested/jailed, and so on. This had such an effect on how people viewed crime and punishment that the members of the weather underground all believed they would basically immediately go to prison after their first bombing.

Why bring this up? Well I believe we should use that for something that will save lives. I believe that any time someone is sick or injured in TV and movies: the correct response should always be on display. Got someone with a big bleed? Have someone apply pressure, (and not just open palm resting on the wound—applying pressure doesn’t look like that). Got someone with a potential spine injury? Don’t move them and support the head so they can’t easily move it. Etc. In doing so people would subconsciously know approximately what to do in emergency situations instead of potentially doing the opposite.

This wouldn’t be a replacement for the fact that folks should be trained to deal with it of course—it would give untrained folks a chance to actually help. We’re all learning things from the media we consume, why not be learning something useful?

Autistics Speak

It occurs to me that I should share an esoteric wisdom with y’all: The best coffee is the easiest and cheapest to make.

• sealable container (jar, pitcher, etc.)

• coffee grounds

• cool water (fill up)

• cover

• shake or stir to blend (or use a nut milk bag like a tea bag for coffee and skip all filtration process)

• let sit on the counter for 24 hours

• pour through a coffee filter, (one of those pour over holders will make this part much easier)

• put in the fridge

Viola: cold brew coffee that lasts a couple of weeks before getting stale.

Cold brew coffee has significantly less acid than heated process coffee, so this will make inexpensive coffees taste way better and will highlight subtleties in more expensive coffees.

Of mass murder and ableist crap

You might ask yourself, why does Tabby go off on what most people believe cause mass shootings?

• If you’ve been here for more than a few days you know I’m autistic. Popular opinion is often that my people are basically just mass shooters waiting to happen, the same for mentally ill folks. I’m not an “awareness seeking” autistic—I’m a radical out autistic demanding rights and acceptance for myself and for all disabled people.

• Mentally ill folks are significantly more likely to be the victims of violent crime than the perpetrators.

• Making mentally ill and/or other neurodivergent folks into scapegoats for mass shooting is dangerous to us and makes us more vulnerable.

• There is literally no mental illness that causes mass shooting. None. If you look through the DSMV you’re not going to find anything like “mass murderism: symptoms include shooting up a highschool”

• Using scapegoats of any kind makes it easier to ignore actual causes of mass shootings/more difficult to prevent them in the future.

• When authoritarians make a scapegoat they do so to describe what that scapegoat would have to be guilty of in order for what they want to do to them to be okay. I am terrified every time they come after us, because one of these times it will be to lock us all up... at best.

So I finally got around to watching the Witch, and my armchair semiotician 🖤 and my fascination with apocalyptic media grew 10 sizes.

I love that they gave us everything we needed as an audience to piece together what happened, without ever stating it, so you could also take it at face value if you either didn’t notice or disagreed.

Okay so then, what do I think happened? To quote egon “spores, mold, and fungus”

I feel it's totally the corn & wheat blight fungus, (the same fungus that is often blamed for the Salem witch trials), with a small dose of a different mold for one character only. The film did a really good job of showing multiple methods of delivery, and lots of different signs of infection like:

They make a point of not only telling us that the corn is trash but also showing us what it looks like—a fungal infection.

They breath the dust of the corn as they never burn it

The goats almost certainly eat the corn

The family *might* be eating the corn

The family is definitely eating some kind of moldy, unleavened bread

The family drinks water contaminated with goat feces (which almost certainly have the corn in them)

The boy ate an apple or apples that have another mold in them

The fever and seizure of the oldest boy

the lack of coordination in the dad

Black Philip being aggressive to the kids that he has to have known his whole life

mastitis in the milking goat, (though the blood could also be an hallucination)

the exaggerated manner of Thomason (to be fair some of that is puberty and some trying to be the one with their shit together as everything is spiriting out of control)

The kids forgetting their prayers

The bouts of abdominal pain

The paranoia permeating everybody

The growing inability to see things rationally

The hallucinations (fed by the blight, by trauma of the baby disappearing and made worse when the oldest son has the fever, seizures, and dies)

The nature of the hallucinations are what they are because it’s what these folks expect. Hallucinagens do a lot of things to a person, most of them make you more suggestable. So everyone who sees the witch or witchcraft, is just getting what their subconscious is sending back to them due to years of fearing witchery.

I want to remind all of the mediocre artists doing any form of art, that the world needs you. I see you out there doing your best, and I know how it feels to know your best will never be the best. Always remember the world needs you.

We need hard working every day artists. We need string quartets who only play at weddings. We need clothing designers who only create children's school uniforms. We need pianists who will never make it out of the piano bar. We need painters who's work is only in hotel rooms. We need poets who only write greeting cards. We need photographers who only do baby & family photos. We need sculptors who only make vases for livingrooms. We need glass blowers who only make dinnerware.

We need you more than we need great artists.

There is no such thing as a preemptive strike

I am so sick of the B.S. phrase: "Preemptive strike". The words a speaker/writer are for when they say that are: "starting a war of aggression". Things that do not make an act of war actually not an act of direct aggression: "they said mean things about us..." "They say they'll hurt us at some point..." "They say they'll hurt our friends at some point..." "We find their culture weird and scary..." "They do things to others we don't like, but no one in any other nation has sought our assistance in fighting against them..." Etc. Things that do make an act of war not one of unprovoked aggression: "Their government officially declared war upon us and has already fired upon us directly with X/Y/Z, we are now responding in kind within the same proportion of destruction while taking care to avoid civilian impact in as much is possible." "The UN has approved use of X amount of force against Y country/regime/etc. and has requested our assistance in doing so. We are saying within those bounds." "Good guys" don't start wars, "bad guys" do. I'm not a fan of hierarchy in general, and even I know that much.

Trumpy’s law

My birthday is coming up, I'ma just leave this here (most of the books have way lower price options if you go to their page)

Since there’s no chance I can move to a city with a university that offers a degree in semiotics in the foreseeable future, (and since there’s nowhere that offers anything resembling an affordable degree in semiotics in the US) I figured I’d do all the coursework on my own and not get an official degree.

Unfortunately semiotics course materials are super spendy and generally not available in public libraries. There are a lot of folks selling their used copies on Amazon, Ebay, etc. but for the wish list I linked to the new copies so that they wouldn’t show up as unavailable if someone’s one copy sold. I am super happy to receive any of these materials in any usable condition or format.

On WWIII, WWIV, & global thermonuclear war

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” ~ Albert Einstein So everyone knows this quote, and lots of folks think we're on the brink of "World War III"... I understand why folks think that WWIII is a global thermonuclear war, but it already happened, and luckily for all of us alive today it never got quite that hot. "What on earth are you talking about tabby? If there had been a WWIII I would have heard about it!" ~ most folks who have read this far You did hear about WWIII, it was a: - multiple proxy war - economic war - propaganda war - intelligence war - cold war in fact, it was so cold, it was called "The Cold War"... Now lots of folks did die in WWIII, many proxy settings were bombed beyond all recognition, the economic side was brutal, the intelligence war killed many and oversaw coups/the installation of dictatorships, etc. but it managed to end without even a tactical nuclear war... unfortunately WWIV had already started during the Cold War, and WWIV is (so far anyway), less clean cut. WWIV is cold, hot, economic, cyber, disconnected uprisings/revolutions, coups, and propaganda. it contains many less obviously connected fronts some of which have names you're familiar with for example: - the war on drugs (encompassing fronts inside the US, in the Middle East, in Central America and South America) - the war on terrorism (encompassing countless global fronts) - Operation Iraqi Liberation - Arab Spring - formation of the EU - pretty much anything you've seen on the news about North Korea in the past 25 years. - etc. It mostly involves things you're less likely to have heard much about... that it started during the Cold War could be considered as meaning that it's part of the Cold War, and to a point it is, (as much of it is a war about/in response to neoliberal economic globalization and the rise of fascism on multiple fronts), but it's fronts can be separated from those of the Cold War, so it is a distinct war. WWIV is getting hotter and appears to be leading to a renewal of a WARSAW v/s NATO standoff, but, it will never be as simple as WWIII was to sort out, or as small as WWIII. WWIV absolutely has the potential to involve limited tactical nuclear conflicts and global thermonuclear war, hopefully not. Since the advent of nuclear weapons: each time a global war exists and the longer each one goes on the more likely it becomes that someone will start a nuclear conflict. Unlike back when nukes were first being made, nuclear conflict today is likely to be more about the EMPs than the physical destruction--but--that doesn't make the physical destruction not exist. I would not be at all surprised to see nuclear weapons used in retaliation for a devastating cyber attack, to prevent any outside communications during a revolution/uprising, to force one opponent to cease fire in a proxy, or in a purely economic conflict, etc. TLDR WWIII already happened, WWIV started in the late 70's/early 80's, is super complex and has no peaceful resolution in sight, global thermonuclear war is less likely than it was in WWIII but limited nuclear conflict is significantly more likely than it was back then.

Just to be clear about Medicaid cuts and caps, this is what that would cause:

CN: ableism, institutions, murder - large quantities of disabled folks will die. how many? I don't know. I'll be in that number though. - those who survive but need assistance to live and cannot afford to pay for it, and/or do not have a loved one who can completely handle this for them will be torn from their communities and end up in legit concentration camps. They won't be called that of course, that would be too honest. Instead they will go by the names the US has always preferred: -- "Sheltered work centers" -- "Institutions" -- "group homes" -- "prison" If you are totally okay with those outcomes, then I don't want to know you. If you are not: do anything you can to stop this immediately.
