And then he chooses to comfort Grace in his last moments because despite it all, he'd failed once again, and now Grace was going to die with him.
Between the way he shakes his head when Grace says "there's no way out," and the dejected look on his face, you can tell he truly thought that was the end. And that makes Leon's comment about Chris at the end all the more interesting because imagine how stressed Chris would've been. Leon had finally reached out for help and Chris was almost too late.
