The FaceBook Scandal. A (Long) Thought.
The federal government is investigating Facebook, and subsequently its CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in a legal battle regarding the invasion of, and lack there of, privacy. Currently, Mark Zuckerberg is testifying before congress. This is in response to the Cambridge Analytica scandal and concern regarding Facebookās role in the dissemination of Russian falsehoods during the 2016 presidential campaign. Arguably the biggest investigation that is currently taking place is from Cambridge Analytica data regarding Facebook sharing the data from as many as 87 million users. What is being debated is whether or not Facebook violated a 2011 consent decree with the FTC regarding deceiving consumers of their rights to privacy.
But this scandal has grown. What were once smaller problems for Facebook are now spreading beyond just the scope of the company. People are even calling for the government to pass regulations for Facebook. There is no simple solution to this problem. Even the speakers of the over 40 senate members in the hearing donāt seem to understand the questions theyāre asking.
While listening to The Daily podcast, I heard one reporter explain that it often sounded like Zuckerberg was a grandchild explaining Facebook to his grandpaāand it did sound that way. A big problem is that Facebookās terms of service are long and convoluted. People donāt really choose to read it before they sign up. But is that on Facebook? Is it not the individualās decision and obligation to read a contract before signing it? Or is it Facebookās responsibility to provide more concise, readable information? The problem here is that I donāt see how Facebook could make the amount of information it must share with its users (regarding being connected to a network of billionsāliterally, billionsāof users) that much more concise. Thereās a lot to share, and, in turn, a lot to read and understand.
So what do we do with a beast we donāt understand? Regulate it? Or inform the people? Either way, I think regulation of the internet is a wildly tricky thing. It is often peopleās only access to information. Is it better to have both falsehoods and truths spread alike? Or is it better to have only truths told, but only shared with few? I donāt think you can completely eradicate this issue without a new one rising.
