Often overlooked aspects of Feeder fishing:

Undoubtedly two of the most important aspects of successful feeder fishing, often overlooked, are accuracy and Feeder choice.

This is particularly important when fishing for silver fish on a tightly pegged commercial, but particularly being as accurate as possible is equally important for any type of feeder fishing.

Clipping up – This is imperative for maintaining accuracy and building a bed of feed.

Placing the line behind the line clip at the distance intended for feeder fishing ensures that you will never go past the point at which you intend to fish and start spreading feed all about the place., which will I assure you limit your potential for regular bites

Feeder Choice – Leaving aside for a moment, inline feeders such as method and pellet feeders, there is still a baffling array of open-ended feeders in different shapes and sizes.Sticking with my tradition of keeping everything as simple as possible, I pretty much exclusively use open-ended cage feeders on commercial still waters when fishing for silvers, as they are often not particularly deep.

Having always been skeptical that anything other than a cage feeder releases the bait at the correct time and having seen some underwater footage confirming this, I believe my decision is justified.

If the venue is unusually deep and I am fishing a particularly neat worm mix then I may consider a plastic feeder (they allow less water in, and so protect the bait a little longer).

Simple Tips Initial Feed - We have all heard accounts of people piling in loads of bait at the start of a session and big weights being caught. My tactic with an initial feed is never to do this.

The attracting power of high protein ground baits these days is well documented, so it is my philosophy that by using a large feeder and starting a session with 4-5 feeder fulls is more than sufficient.

Hook Baits – When feeder fishing durable bait is imperative, as it aids confidence that the bait is still present after the cast, and due to its self-hooking nature I will ALWAYS prefer the bait to be hair rigged. Casting

Frequency – Generally my pattern is to cast every 10 minutes during the first hour, after the first few fish I will attempt to follow or adapt to to the conditions and frequency of bites

Spending many years on the match scene I have been a witness to the ever-growing list of bait companies selling this and that ‘miracle bait’ very few of which truly are something different and innovative.

The amount of advertising, that goes on is unreal, this sponsored angler plugging this bait and another plugging another. It is so easy these days to get drawn in to the marketing of bait companies selling this and that ‘miracle bait’ that will catch more fish than any other. Yet, the one thing I have become certain of in my years of coarse fishing is that such a bait does not exist.

With this being said, there are a few baits that I will go to either when, conditions are particularly challenging, when visiting a new venue or when nothing else is working, and they are pretty much universal across all types of commercial style venue.

Here is an impartial list of baits that have brought me success over the years fishing against some of the countries top anglers.

Pellets - (I never leave home without them)

Pellets in any guise are my number one bait in most conditions especially, though not exclusively for carp

.Here is a list of the ones that I find are worth buying

.Maryuku JPZ’s – Cracking little jelly pellet that comes in a range of sizes, Versatile, durable and rarely rejected, unlike the more durable but harder banded pellets. I have had great success in winter and early spring with these pellets often inspiring a bite when everything else failed.

Bait-tech Expanders – Great expander pellet spongy grain running through the centre and grip the hook really well, so they give confidence when lifting and dropping for F1’s.

Ground baits -

;Sonubaits Expander crush – Dampened and riddled for a fine mix this ground bait made from (you guessed it) crushed expander works much better than any other I have tried, brilliant in a little pole pot, making sure there is always some bait falling through the water column. Carp love it!

Sonubaits Hemp and Hali crush – Bit off topic but tis ground bait unbeatable when Barbel fishing with meat or halibut pellet on the hook, but the carp don’t mind it either.

Flavours – I am particularly sceptical when it come to flavorings, However..Dynamite baits Predator plus – this works well on maggots or in chopped worm on natural venues, or for carp on commercials, and also its original purpose dead baits whilst predator fishing, a great all-purpose flavoring.I’m sure there are other useful baits out there, this is not an exhaustive list, however, the things that have been included on this list have brought me lots of success, particularly catching carp, on all types of venues.

Method in the madness

So in a change from my usual match fishing on commercials, or fluff chucking for trout on little still waters, I recently went out for a day on a natural(ish) water situated way back off the beaten track on some farm land near to where I live .When I say natural, I guess what I actually mean is not intensively commercially stocked still water that contains many of the native British species you would expect to find in a park lake or something of that type. Roach, Bream, Tench, and the odd Carp (I was told a few were put in by the farmer years back, amongst rumours of other species like Barbel). But in reality this place is a bit of an unknown quantity.I arrive at the venue, the lake is bathed in spring sunshine with a fine mist clinging to the water as it’s still early (7:00am) and to be quite honest, still a little brisk! However, it’s flat calm and the only thing disturbing the water is a pair of crested grebes diving on the hunt for breakfast. My approach today, will be my go to method for a new venue, especially in spring on a natural water when I'm expecting silvers to be the order of the day - feeder fishing tactics. My plan is to fish soaked micro-pellets and red maggots in a kamasan black cap feeder starting with double red maggot on the hook with worm and sweetcorn as a change bait.Fishing, a standard paternoster rig with 18” of 0.10mm Powerline hook length to a size 18 kamasan B911 hook (hair rigged for the sweet corn), on a Preston F1 feeder rod, Shimano stradic reel to 4lb Maxima mainline.My first cast I fill the feeder with soaked micros and maggots and the fail safe double red maggot on the hook. The first hour goes by and apart from a few small roach all I can manage is continuous line bites. Now whilst I am enjoying the peace and quite of this secluded spot, whithout the hustle and bustle of a commercial fishery I want to keep busy, and so I opt for a change bait to the corn. Hopefully this will eliminated those liners.What came next, I was not expecting - no sooner had the feeder hit the deck, the rod tip lurched round method feeder style and I was into a solid stillwater Barbel of around 4lb. After landing this fish after a brilliant scrap, I decided to stick with the hair rigged corn and go again….And you guessed it, BANG! The same again, except this time it was a pristine little common carp around the same weight. And so this continued for the rest of the day, the majority being carp between 3-6lb. It was like being back on a commie in an out and out carp match, so much so that I even switched to an inline method feeder by the end and just fed pellets with corn on the hook.So at the end of the day I had caught, 28 carp, 6 Barbel, and a handful of roach - Not at all what I was expecting.
