He was so arrogant and apathetic back then, but then you realise how much he changed so quickly the second he was away from the other Ocelots and it makes me wonder how much time he devoted to making himself as appealing to his friends as possible...
It can be hard to see at times but Lukas can actually be a pretty big people pleaser, it's just the first time we see him people pleasing it's to people who suck /hj.
Taking on a greaser/leather jacket gang aesthetic to make them all look cooler, which granted he does just seem to enjoy on his own but also likely did to appeal to them.
We dont see his love for writing/books kick in fully until the portal hall arc, and I like to think this was because the other ocelots bullied him out of it.
Lukas is naturally empathetic and gentle as a person, but imagine him trying to repress this for the sake of fitting in with the other Ocelots? Like how if Jesse says Aiden hurt Rueben by setting him on fire Lukas's first response is "maybe but I had nothing to do with it..." meanwhile post development Lukas would likely show a much kinder attitude in response. (Him trying to fit in with the other ocelots again, even if it goes against what he actually thinks.)
Lukas seems to rely heavily on how well liked he is by those around him, I think a good scene that shows this is if he leaves the dirt hurt/treehouse he seems to try and prove himself to Jesse-in a way. Gathering food for their team, telling them about how resourceful he is and how most of the time he is a good friend-showing that being a good friend is something he prides himself on.
Lukas is literally willing to go out alone in a giant eldritch horrors world to find his friends.
In episode 5 when he finally comes to terms with how genuinely awful Aiden and the blazerods are his immediate response is "I hope they fucking kill them." Which to me kinds reads as him finally getting to crash out over how much of himself he let be corrupted with their toxicity and the people who aided it.
Once his developments kinda finished he is ALL OVER Jesse. Constantly praising them, helping them in any way he can, even when he takes over as leader the occasional times he does he's always respectful and makes sure they know he values their leadership.
To me it reads as if Lukas is desperate to please, even if it means going against his actual desires and true thoughts. He says it himself he's been told he's resourceful, considered to be a good friend and this is what gives him his sense of self. If Lukas isn't being a good friend then he's being nothing at all in his eyes, so as long as he has friends who like him and keep him around then he considers himself fulfilled, even if those friends aren't the best people, so long as he's pleasing them, he himself is happy. The company he keeps also seem to leave a heavy impact on his personality, which is why we see him at his worst with the ocelots, and at his best with Jesse and their friends.
I'm just gonna add in this kind of hidden line of dialogue (only said when Jesse is silent) from S2E2. Context: Lukas talking to Radar about the mean comments the Admin keeps making about them.
It's no wonder he joined Jesse's group so quickly once they weren't there to bully him.
So I went and saw Young Washington with my family. The movie was pretty alright, albeit a bit slow at the beginning. It also suffered from the modern trend of dull, dark colors, even in the more positive scenes. But towards the end, the film better found its footing and I got more invested. The chemistry between the named characters was great, and I was able to understand why they cared so much. I even felt inspired, and almost patriotic. Yay for a good story! So as I do, I stuck around for the credits so that I could gain a better appreciation for the human effort put into this film, find out what kinds of teams had to be put together to make it happen. And it was pretty good, I caught some character names that I'd missed.
And then my smile disappeared. Onto the screen rolled a small team of people listed as coordinating the AI usage for the film.
...AI? Artificial intelligence? Surely it's some other sort of acronym, just poorly thought out. So I looked it up, praying it wasn't, but there it was. Young Washington used generative AI in over 100 shots.
I never saw a disclaimer for this. Not in the marketing or posters. I will say, the director was very open about this AI usage, but I still feel kinda scammed because I didn't know beforehand.
I'm very against generative AI and believe it has no place in any kind of art, especially film. If you want to do it, you can do it with practical effects, clever editing, and/or CGI. Your predecessors were innovative, you can be too. I understand why they couldn't practically get the shots they wanted, endangering your actors is stupid and it's really expensive for an independent company to do CGI. But if you want shots like that giant freezing river or cannons exploding, then you gotta figure out a way to make it happen.
Perhaps you, dear reader, don't understand why I (and many others) find the usage of generative AI to be a bad thing. Imagine, if you will, someone gives you a drink. And it tastes great. Then your friend tells you after the fact that there was alcohol in the drink. You are someone who intentionally doesn't drink alcohol. The person never gives you alcoholic drinks. You have no reason to expect alcohol in the scenario. So why would you have asked if it was alcoholic?
I just feel cheated and ashamed that this is what we're using to celebrate 2 and a half centuries of our country.
Loved the fish intro and the Caine recap. It was awesome. I hope it gets archived somewhere, 'twas fun.
I love Ribbit. I was totally caught off guard by the mention of her parents being Mormon though (and thus Ribbit being ex-Mormon), as an LDS girlie myself (surprise?). She's super sweet and I love her and I feel oh so bad for her because the Ribbit montage hurt. I wish she'd gotten some epilogue or an IRL design. I hope to see some good happy fanfics with her soon.
Then there's Jax. As someone who's hated him since the first episode, this episode did make me like him. Or her? I quite understand the transfem Jax theory now.
I don't know whether to ship Jax and Ribbit or not. They seem very shippable in an alternate timeline where Jax doesn't ditch her after their conversation. Whether or not it's romantic, let them be happy together :(
I think Goose poured a lot of herself into Jax, as a bit of a self-insert even. It's not too uncommon among authors and creators to do that. I think she once said she related most to him out of the cast, and I think I get why now.
As much as I wish Jax had been saved, I'm not sure if he was ready for that. I like the abstraction aquarium, it gives lots of hope for the future :)
He's still annoying. But in a "bad but sad" kinda way. If only he'd gotten a redemption arc... I guess that's what fanfics are for! If there are any happy ending fics for Jax, someone let me know please.
I might've cried during Jax and Ribbit's heart-to-heart and the "Isn't She Lovely?" montage. Got hit in the feels fr.
Holy crap the IRL designs. I didn't know whether to expect seeing the cast outside the circus, but it was done oh so well. I swear I've seen those exact people drawn before in people's headcanon designs. And Kinger is a certified girl dad both IRL and in the circus, as he has been being a father figure to Pomni and Ragatha especially. I'm a sucker for the found family parents, gotta be one of my favorite tropes. I need a motivational talk from Kinger.
Ms. "there won't be any ships" Gooseworx giving us Abstragedy in the end. All the little handholding and stuff was very sweet. I don't know how they figured it out nor do I want to know, but good for them.
There's also Caine. Honestly an amazing redemption. He fixed what he could and humbly offered his apology. He accepted that the people he hurt would take time to forgive him, but they would try. He let them come to him in their own time instead of just snapping them wherever. I was so ready to cheer on his death as a certified hater, but his redemption was beautiful so I sit corrected.
Pomni has been one of my favorite main characters ever. As someone who keeps winding up in leadership roles, I like how she's learned to rely on the people around her. I feel like a bit more could have been done with that motif of teamwork, but it worked nonetheless.
Rip Kaufmo, I thought he'd be way more plot significant. But I think he was still handled well and I liked the flashbacks that told us a bit about him.
Also Bubble is definitely Abel then, right? I'm not sure if I caught that correctly.
Anyways,
Overall, it was very heartfelt. Despite the incredibly cartoony designs, I seriously got hit in the feels. The voice acting was incredible, everyone's rent was DUE. It was a beautiful ending to a beautiful show, and it turned out incredibly sweet and heartfelt. I could feel the passion for the story being told in every aspect. It's a show I will definitely revisit.
