“Since having to make a lot of decisions on my own, I’ve becme a bit more cool-headed. Truthfully, it’s a difficult thing for a member like me, whose colour is not distinct.“

analysis of `fine`
covering eyes on biasing/stanning taeyeon, I admit that this song is an example of how emotions can be clearly delivered.
delivered properly - with all the emotions saved, all the pain included.
not being an expert in music, not knowing what theory of music is, you are still able to analyse a song, dragging out all impressions (suppose they are plural, like pieces of broken glass) one by one - out of yourself, out of your soul.
regarding the song… so. now it`s June and the song was released at the end of February, with promotions in early March. still, I listen to it every day - and never get tired with the same song, and it often applies to majority of songs sung by taeyeon.
the song starts with low notes:
“찢어진 종잇조각에 담아낸 나의 진심에 선명해져 somethin’ bout you”
and:
“Yeah 나를 많이 닮은 듯 다른 넌 혹시 나와 같을까 지금 괜한 기대를 해”
with low-key notes, taeyeon expresses how something about `him` became clearer for her after writing the true feelings on a small piece of paper (psychological trick tho; it really helps, as well as telling someone about your problems personally and orally, obviously). in these husky-yet-smooth-sounding notes you can feel her hopes for them to feel the same - in the same way; considering a little difference between, nevertheless making it possible to say a word `similar`.
“하루 한 달 일 년쯤 되면 서로 다른 일상을 살아가”
i`m not sure if it`s a bridge or not, but the tone goes higher, making listeners ready for the 1st climax of the song. as time goes by, the way of living their lives will be different. still, there seems to be a bit of questioning the fact - though her intonation doesn`t show it completely.
“나는 아니야 쉽지 않을 것 같아 여전하게도 넌 내 하루하루를 채우고 아직은 아니야 바보처럼 되뇌는 나 입가에 맴도는 말을 삼킬 수 없어 It’s not fine Ah ah ah ah it’s not fine”
time for 1st climax; i`ve been saying it for a long time that taeyeon`s voice is like a hidden highlight. when you get to know it, you will probably wait for the moment in the songs where it blows up like a tornado, like a windstorm. the same applies to 1st climax, where her voice sounds frantically a bit, though stability can be felt too. it is a peculiarity, I guess, of her magical skill - sharp high notes sound clear and frantic at the same time.
and she cancels the things said before, saying that `he is still filling my days` and `she, like a fool, cannot stop the words from spinning inside her mouth`. obviously, like for everyone to decide to finally move on, it`s hard for her - “it`s not fine”, the words that prove it. no doubt that everyone would feel the same; moving on is always a hard thing (literally meaning that all the memories should be weathered out like dust).
“머릴 질끈 묶은 채 어지러운 방을 정리해 찾고 있어 somethin’ new”
“가끔 이렇게 감당할 수 없는 뭐라도 해야 할 것만 같은 기분에 괜히 움직이곤 해”
“하루 한 달 일 년 그쯤이면 웃으며 추억할 거라 했지만”
you know that awkward feeling of ‘need’ to do something? when you finally decided to make a crucial step, but still don`t know what the first step will be like? the same here; a messy room is equal to that mess that happens in one`s life before making them start changing !at least! something.
and she moves around the room - the life, maybe? - trying to keep up with that feeling of a ‘NEED’. plus - thinking about his words. the words “I`ll be reminiscing it, smiling”.
<2nd climax>
lyrics are the same; but what makes you pay attention is the range of runs (melisma) that taeyeon uses. double “it`s not fine” sounds clear despite being a run, not a first-plan part of the song. the more runs a vocalist uses, the more professional he/she is. same here, isn`t it?
“의미 없는 농담 주고받는 대화 사람들 틈에 난 아무렇지 않아 보여 무딘 척 웃음을 지어 보이며 너란 그늘을 애써 외면해보지만”
i literally wanna shout out how close it is to me; and to everyone who had an experience of doing the same. what i`m talking about is to be like nothing happened, pretend that everything is okay, smiling, throwing pointless jokes and holding onto back-and-forth convos with lots of people in; and, the biggest thing, smiling numbly and trying to turn around from the shadow of someone you`re trying to go over. still. yet. unsuccessfully.
notice how her voice is strong on last word of the last line; 외면해보지만 is one of my favourite parts of the song. it`s not belted completely, it`s not long a lot, but it`s full of emotions and pain. which is sometimes more important than plain high notes sounding like autotune.
“우리 마지막 그 순간이 자꾸 떠올라 잘 지내란 말이 전부였던 담담한 이별 아직은 아니야 바보처럼 되뇌는 그 말 입가에 맴도는 말을 삼킬 수 없어 It’s not fine Ah ah ah it’s not fine oh Ah ah ah it’s not fine”
last part is full of runs and melisma, as always, i still remember how i was impressed when i listened to it for the first time. taeyeon has never showed such a wide vocal range that is supported from the very beginning to the very end.
frantic sound and painful notes are felt every time she knocks down the voice, not belting it completely. which is a skill too - and a unique one, for sure. while you can hear runs that are of a high tone, taeyeon adds middle-toned runs too on the background, which is a great contrast for a song.
another part that I like a lot is the head voice part. head voice is always felt like something angelic, and in taeyeon`s case it`s so different from falsetto sound.
finally, taeyeon repeats that for her everything that is going on around is not fine at all, and the time hasn`t come yet to call the state as a `fine one`. obviously, it requires time - lots of it for majority of us - and she is not an exception, I guess. so do I, for whom going over people is such a consistent problem.
`fine` is a masterpiece in its own way, a masterpiece in one tone and key without any drastic vocal jumps or changes. simplicity of her vocal here is not a problem or a con, it`s what makes a great song unique - and, notice, it`s not even a ballad, it`s something different…
…which inspires a lot.
if you really love something, you have to know how to let go
