wanted to try and draw Blue in the SU style. not sure how close I got 6 ~ 9;

Decided to update Blue Lace Agate’s design since I haven’t drawn her in ages. I wanted to give her a less soft vibe... since canonically, agates are meant to terrify. She’s way more of a noodle bc I picture her to be the supposed “good cop” to a bulkier quartz.

Thinking about an updated canon for Blue. She’s an extremely gifted telepath (blue lace agates are supposed to help w communication), so I imagine she would have been something of an elite enforcer. Blue would’ve mainly dealt with higher profile criminals and gems the aristocracy wanted gone. Since her strength is mostly mental, she likely had a Quartz or Ruby guard to ensure her safety.

In this update, she’d still be estranged from Homeworld. But the disconnect isn’t caused by disillusionment. Rather, she did her job too well and upset the wrong gems. Didn’t help that her guard double-crossed her in the hopes of attaining a higher status.

Idk where to go from there... still have some stuff to ponder. But I like the idea of Blue learning empathy over time.

Gem Views on Fusion... and stuff (warning for mentions of manipulation and coercion)

Black Opal -- uses it to manipulate other Gems, viewing fusion like some view sex. They see it as a means to an end and a way to trap others and hold control over them. They’re seductive and coercive, promising intimacy and understanding that does not come inherently to Gem culture. But all they really want is additional power and, on a superficial level, to be a beautiful giant nb gay rock the likes of which the universe hasn’t seen. Black Opal is toxic to fuse with, whether over time or through multiple fusions. The initial fusion is humanoid but becomes more monstrous with each iteration. Their personality usually has the stronger influence on the resulting fusion because of their hypnotic abilities... that and they’re a high-maintenance, demanding jerkface.

Blue Lace Agate -- initially held Homeworld’s viewpoint but changed her mind after having to fuse with a different type of Quartz out of necessity. Her telepathic abilities made the experience more intimate than she bargained for. Blue became more curious about it after that but did not have the opportunity to fuse again until she defected from Homeworld and became marooned on Earth. She found the experience just as strange but extremely pleasant, and hopes to get a better understanding of the emotional complexity and closeness that fusion can bring.

Blue Sandstone -- has never fused and has little reason to because vir role as a scout often has vir working alone. Vi has witnessed the emotional side of fusion and as a result, vi finds fusion both interesting and intimidating. Blue Sandstone is often lonely and wishes to have more interactions with other Gems. Vi fantasizes about fusing but never shares these thoughts with others, too afraid of the consequences... whether it be rejection, harm to vir person, or someone actually offering to fuse with vir.

Magnetite -- held no opinion on it before she hooked up with Black Opal. The intimacy and rush of power excited her. She became addicted to it, enjoying the feeling of being herself, being someone else, and being something completely and utterly new. It was common for her to search out fusion partners while she was still whole. She was just as seductive about fusion as her former compatriot, though much less manipulative. To her, it was a fun way to spend some time than anything serious. Now that she is broken, it is unclear if her addiction to fusion remains. She is far more concerned with revenge during the brief periods of time she makes a reappearance.

The Twins -- don’t understand fusion. They get the basic concept of it but the complicated nature of it eludes them. Thankfully the Twins have not retained Magnetite’s addiction to fusing because they cannot remember being her. The Twins’ fusions have largely been instinctual. Though they don’t get along, they often feel a strong desire to be with each other anyway. It’s common for them to fuse together without thinking, and at times, it seems like they’re doing so in a trance. As stated before, when the Twins fuse they form the original Magnetite. But they can’t retain her form for long because of the physical damage to her gem. It is unknown whether they can fuse with other Gems... though if it is possible, there’s a possibility the fusion might be corrupt.

Blue Lace Agate is a Quartz gem, but she is smaller and less muscular in appearance than the usual fair. This is because her gem is supposed to help enhance communication (particularly with angels). Blue Lace Agates are meant to be sly manipulators with silver tongues. They use their telepathic abilities to probe their targets, searching their minds for fears and weaknesses that can be used against them.

Homeworld employs Blue Lace Agates when dealing with civilizations that are of equal or higher advancement (–“angels” if you will, beings of a higher status). They often pair the smaller gem with a larger Quartz, creating a good cop/bad cop dynamic.

Thinking about Blue Lace Agate bc quartz gems are on the large side and Blue's canonically tiny. Maybe her variety are enforcers? The good cop to a larger quartz's bad, but they're not necessarily on your side either. Sneaky operators that use their charisma and way with words to manipulate others. The gem homeworld seems like the type to play dirty if they're already taking things by force.

miscellaneous headcanons about Blue Lace Agate

she’s not much for fighting, only choosing to use her tuning fork when she has to incapacitate an enemy

because she’s avoided a lot of physical combat, she hasn’t suffered a major injury to her gem. but that’s also fueled a fear of being seriously hurt

she’s petite, standing at about 4′11″

she’s amiable because of her skill with communication and abilities as a telepathic medium, making her rather easy to fuse with if her partner is willing.

it’s easy for her to get lost in a fusion if she’s fused for too long because she feels extremely connected to her partner(s)
