OK SO

i used this picture to introduce our new unit on us expansionism/imperialism

it took the kids a bit to figure out that they were skulls. and i asked them why/to give me reasons why you would have SO MANY of them. 

my homeroom fared the best bc they were like “well, you gotta use the whole part of an animal. bones make tools, fur for clothes, meat for food, etc”

and i was like ok but why would you kill hundreds of the animal at a time? 

and they were thinking about it, and i ruined it for them being like “yeah these are specifically the skulls of the bison white ppl killed to make it impossible for native americans to live in their traditional ways, welcome to unit 3 we about to talk some ish”

highlights from that discussion include: 

-me asking what is in the way of western expansion, kids who i didnt have last year going indians and me going WHOMST and the kids from last year yelling and telling them she will hit you

-one of my groups that happens to be all kids from last year fucked up and said indians and they were all like NOO MISS WAIT

-the kids from last year, who were in 7th grade, remember seeing the stuff i was showing the 8th graders. so theyre telling the new kids about the photographs that show the reservation schools. and everyone is really horrified 

-i made my kids cry telling them real quick about hawaii and what we did: “yo wait to i tell you guys about hawaii” miss what did they do to moana “nah just. remember in lilo and stitch?” ....miss NO “remember the song nani sang to lilo when they thought they were going to be separated? thats the song the last hawaiian queen wrote to her country when we were taking over” MISS

-they didnt believe me so they looked it up on the laptop (which is GOOD im proud of them) but then i had like 7 kids sitting in a corner crying and i was like no wait you need to practice your vocabulary i need you to know what expansionism means
