Logan made an acknowledging sound, his eyes scanning the crowd around them. Yes, it was a joyful day but he couldn’t help but feel on edge even so. Not just because of the crowd and his heightened senses but also because part of him was worried that someone would use this important day to disrupt everything Chuck and the X-Men had worked so hard for.

“Hope it stays that way.” He finally admits out loud but only loud enough for Ororo to hear with her standing right next to him.

“You can always wake me, kid.” As long as he was careful about it, at least. Logan never wanted a repeat of what happened the one time when Rogue had woken him from one of his nightmares...

“But since we’re both awake now anyways: what’s keeping you up, hm?”

Logan stared at Neville long and hard for a moment before finally answering. “Only  if I know it’s not out of some self-sacrificing bullshit motivation. ...You know that I’ll always have your back, no matter what.” He didn’t even bother phrasing it as a question since it was a fact for him, even if Neville might still struggle with this truth at times.

Logan almost spit out the beer he had been drinking at the sudden question. Luckily that didn’t happen, neither did he choke on it (thanks to healing factor being a thing for him). Still, he took a moment - or two - till he actually found his voice (without risking sounding as flustered as he felt). 

“No idea where you got that thought from, kid, but no. Storm and I are just good friends.”

“I feel like we had this conversation before...” Running a hand through his hair, Logan tried to find the best words for this and made sure that Neville was meeting his eyes as he added, “You don’t need to act like me or anyone else to be brave. You’re already plenty enough brave, kid and it doesn’t matter what anyone else says.” Placing a hand gently in the other’s hair, ruffling it softly and adding “I’m proud of you as you are.”

He wasn’t good at that whole emotional vulnerability thing but in the last few years it had gotten better. Among others thanks to the young man next to him. Turning his head slightly to look at Neville, Logan pulled his cigar out of his mouth and he admitted in an unusually quiet voice, “And you’re mine.”
