it’s not very common for survivors to start a trial so close to a killer. the entity might be the cosmic embodiment of evil, but it at least tries to seem fair most of the time

he thought maybe this particular group of idiots pissed it off somehow, maybe by waiting till the last minute to take the hatch or something as stupid

though after hearing your conversation, he wonders if it was actually for the sole purpose of him eavesdropping as he is right now.

you were crouched alongside two other survivors, discussing gen scouting plans and who would do what

it starts when one of you gets up, ready to hurry along, and says, “let’s get going, least the cowboy shows up and knocks us all out with that redeemer of his”

you stand up alongside them, an eyebrow raised. “with his what?”

“the redeemer?” they scoff. “you know, the speargun.”

he scoffs inwardly almost at the same time you shake your head. ”first off, he’s no cowboy. he was a bounty hunter and even got deputized. second off, it's called death to bayshore. ‘the redeemer’ is the name for his ability with the chain.”

well, damn.

you ain’t the reporter but you sure know your stuff, eh?

the other survivors roll their eyes at you and go on their ways. caleb doesn’t pay them much attention, no—he can't help but watch you for the rest of the match

you think being the obsession is a coincidence—a particularly funny one, considering your emotions toward the killer—but one nonetheless.

it’s when you feel the speargun hit the generator you’re working on that you realize—

you’re the last one. and he’s found you.

you barely have time to squeak before he’s approached you, death to bayshore in hand.

“how’s it feel, seein’ it up close?”

you’re beyond confused, and you hear the deathslinger’s chuckle at your furrowed brows. the knowing smirk is what clicks to you—god, he heard you at the beginning of the trial, didn’t he?

you don’t know what else to do besides answer, so you tell him “…it’s actually really cool to experience up close and unharmed”

“are ye?”

you feel what is most likely blood trailing down your arm and to your elbow, covering the wound with a gasp. yeah, there’s no way you’d be unharmed.

the gunslinger only chuckles that evil laugh of his once more, easily picking you up

“since ya liked it so much, why don’t ya look at it some more.” he chuckled again—and you notice; it was a statement, not a suggestion

you do take your time staring at his weapon, and not only it—his leg brace, his coat, his shirt, his hands—you’re pretty much burning a hole into him at this point.

you’re so caught up looking at him that you don’t realize what he just dropped you in front of: the hatch.

“keep those pretty eyes of yours on your friends next time, dotey”

and your vision goes black.

now, he knows you didn't buy this in the coral sea and he definitely knows you didn't fight a sturgeon for it

when you tell him it's handmade he... definitely thought it a possibility, but is still somewhat surprised. my, are you trying to join the family?

after that, jade likes to pretend that nothing has changed

any octavinelle student will know otherwise though, as he watches you come and go like a cat to a mouse

he was merely teasing before, but... what if you did join the family?

"did koebi-chan go after a sturgeon for thiiis...?"

he's clearly joking. thinks you got it as a souvenir from the coral sea

once he finds out they are handmade, he laughs and squeezes you.

koebi-chan got a replica of their earrings to match him! how cute is that?

he doesn't let you go for hours after this. he likes the texture of your earring and plays with it a lot while you try not to burst in flames at the fact he’s really close to your face

for the next week or so, floyd's eyes follow you everywhere, when he doesn’t follow along himself.

anyone who sees the earring will clearly get the message, right?

mess with the prefect and you might find yourself having some trouble from a certain duo of brothers in octavinelle.

on longing

you, zhongli notices, really like to sing.

you sing songs he does not, could not know. songs from your world, you had mentioned when he first heard you sing, a longing that only seemed to be calmed by the melody flowing from your lips.

you're not that good at it, you say. he knows that. but like tiny ink smudges in a mural, he deems those imperfections worthless at the face of the emotions with which you sing.

he finds he is most lovesick when you sing to yourself, unashamed of your voice, the only thing that helps play the tune only you can hear. he sees then, the glimmer in your eyes, looking at a horizon he has never seen.

it’s in these moments that he remembers that, despite the fact that you are mortal and he is not, you have seen things that he in his time as an archon had never. he can learn, from you, things other mortals are unable to express.

when you turn to him, throat sore and eyes full of longing and loneliness, he understands.

you might never have these songs again (in the way you wish to have them) but you have him, with all his smudges and blotches from years and years of a non-human existence, and he doesn’t intend to let you go.
