He’d not even noticed them at first, his eyes just skimming over them as they blended in with the many shimmering tails catching sunlight in their jars. It’s only when he hears that tiny little sound that he realises one of these ‘fish’ is most certainly not like the others.
He stoops a little to better see them, the cogs in his brain whirring almost visibly as he tries to deduce just what this creature is, and what it is they’re doing here. The shopkeeper’s usually busy boasting about all their incredible finds, but Mettaton’s not sure he’s ever seen anything this peculiar in here. Seemingly half-humanoid, and yet far smaller than even a child. He’s seen some odd things in his time, but none quite so odd as this.
He’s at a loss for a good few moments - does he talk to them? Buy them? He’s just broken off an engagement, for God’s sake, and here he is contemplating filling the void left by his ex-fiancee with... a mutant fish.
So much for today being about getting himself back on track.
Still, though. He may not miss the bruises, but he sure as hell misses the company (and the money. But that’s sort of a different matter). He’d grown up in a huge family; and promptly ditched out on them for aforementioned ex-fiancee the moment the man had come along. Mettaton’s never really been alone. And thus far, he’s really not enjoying the experience. Dramatic monologuing’s far less fun without at least one ear (however unwilling).
❝...can you hear me?❞ he murmurs eventually, pressing a single finger to the glass and meeting their tiny hand. He’s quiet in the interest of not being tossed out for talking to the fish - but it would have been terribly rude of him to just go on staring. This little creature deserves the courtesy of an address, at the very least.
