Hello Fiddleford! We’ve been told you use ASL, and as a C.O.D.A (child of deaf adult) and also someone with auditory processing problems; I’m wondering if you learned official ASL, or if you use See-sign? Or is it a mix of both?
My dad (born in ‘71 so he’d be 11 if you were to meet him, haha) taught me mostly ASL, but some signs we made up ourselves. I’m also likely not as fluent as you are, as my dad reads lips very well (and so do I), and he had cochlear implants since I was about 6. So I haven’t had much need to use it except with my aunt and brother whenever I see them.
I learned ASL. SEE didn’t really come around until I was already at college, and I learned some but most people I sign with use ASL. I know how to fingerspell in BANZSL and that doesn’t come up much either.
I know you messaged Ford, mentioning resources and support groups, but I wanted to talk about that. Don’t know how much y’all got in 2021, though I am sure it’s better than what we have now.
It’s easier to find communities in larger cities and in general I’ve found it’s a real all or nothing thing. Either you find a community and you get resources, or you don’t and nobody around you could even point you in a direction to go. I got to say I really like the community I’m around now, especially because a couple of us are into technical work and when we’ve got free time we try working on some devices here and there.
