“They’re flowers.” Molly said slowly, as if Lin hadn’t understood by looking at the blooms. “People generally bring them to others if they are feeling particularly romantic, or are needing to make an apology and are terrible with the words. In this case, I saw the flowers and thought you’d like them for your apartment or something. I’m not sure why that’s so strange.”

"Would my little gremlin treat me to lunch?" came her question, the surreptitious smile halfway hidden in the corner of her mouth present as always. Perched on a stool nearby, her chin resting in her palm, Lin watched her with interest, though soon found her attention straying. She hadn't been given a full tour around the shop --- wouldn't ask for it --- and so everyday she found more and more details; captivating. [Lin wanted to poke Molly. lol. ]

“Hm?” The bespectacled shopkeeper looked up from the box of books she’d been sorting; her attention had once again drifted away from her current company. It was difficult for it not to, with all of the donations and treasures floating in and out of the place. “What?”

“Oh, lunch…” In truth, she’d forgotten to eat that morning, so the hunger would grip her the moment food was set in front of her. It was already gnawing around the edges of her belly–she really needed to set up a reminder for these things. “I could swear it’s your turn to buy the burgers…”

She hadn’t replied yet. Molly wasn’t certain if it was simply that her thumbs weren’t working anymore, or that she simply couldn’t conjure the necessary words to give Lin the response she deserved. So, Molly continued to read and reread the message, unable to hear much around the blood roaring in her ears. 

What if Lin was only drunk? What if it was a text meant for someone else? Molly had done that before…felt the embarrassment in the realization. And what was worse; that Lin had sent it by accident, or that Molly, should she reply, feel embarrassment at assuming the message was for her? 

Finally, she bit her lip, sending:

“You know Sim?” The second his name slipped from her mouth, Molly’s coloring intensified–or perhaps the flush simply came from the amount of whiskey she’d consumed. “He’s just…he’s Sim, you know? He’s my best friend–well, I got other best friends too, but Sim is like…S-Sim is one of the best best friends. He’s just this big teddy bear, and you just want to cuddle up next to him and hold him and mush his teddy bear face…” Her hands held the hair, demonstrating just how someone might mush his face, with an added eskimo kiss. “Like that. Where is he? I’mma do that…”

31. Surprise Kiss

Whiskey was a great wingman, Molly decided. Not always the best with words, but her confidence always grew with a glass in her fist–or was it more that her stupidity grew? Was she brave or simply dumb? 

Regardless, however grateful she could be for it, she sometimes did wish that the liquor swimming in her veins could speak up. It might have told her that this was a terrible idea; that Lin wasn’t the type of girl she wanted to get mixed up with. 

And yet, before she could listen to the little voice of reason, she’d leaned in and captured Lin’s lips with her own, cutting the woman off mid-sentence.
