BIOGRAPHY

Lance Smith was born as Benjamin Lance Murray. His parents, Joshua and Eliza, paired him off from birth with Karissa Anne Smith - the daughter of their close friends. When classifications were revealed, that playful agreement turned into more of a serious discussion. Lance, who never wanted to disappoint his parents, allowed Karissa to Claim him. The two had talked in private of the conditions - of Lance’s desire to change his name from Benjamin to Lance, of his desire to attend a submissive Academy elsewhere to further his education.. all things Karissa easily agreed to.

The summer after their Claiming ceremony - which took place days before Lance’s 18th birthday - Lance’s parents were killed in a tragic boating accident with a few friends. The Smith’s took Lance in, more than they already had, and helped Karissa navigate the healing process with Lance.

Lance went to school that fall, much to Karissa’s hesitation, and the Academy proved to be just what he needed. Lance loved St. Louis and the freedom and friendship it offered him. As graduation grew closer, Lance fought against Karissa’s desire for him to move back to Alaska. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do, but Alaska was not the best option for him. He ended up convincing her to move to New York City, where the two live today - with Lance as a house sub.

As soon as Lance had landed on Friday he was greeted by Mrs. Smith with a kind smile and a hug. As much as he already missed Izzie, he could not wait to go see Karissa - to see how much progress she had made and to find out their timeline moving forward.

His mother-in-law had showed him to the room before giving them some space. Looking back, he almost wished she had stayed.

Lance tugged his coat tighter against his body, wandering the streets as he tried to make sense of this.

“Lancelot -- Lance... We need to talk.”

He had thought the time apart was temporary. That Karissa just needed to learn how to live without the use of her legs. He had no idea that she had been testing him.

“I need time.. to find myself. We are much different people then we were all those years ago..”

The paper. She’d already had it there, ready to be signed. A single paper to be signed in front of a notary, the paper that would send the last six years down the drain. Their history, their relationship.. gone with a set of signatures.

“This is what’s best for us. I know Isabella will let you stay with her. New York City is your dream. Anchorage is my reality. I.. have been struggling. I am tired of being jealous. I am tired of not knowing what’s best for you.”

He had wanted to argue that she was the best for him - always. Look at all the help she’d given him over the years, everything she helped him through. How was it possible that she no longer wanted him? After everything...

“Of course I still love you. You will always have a piece of my heart. You will always be Lancelot.. you always have been.”

He had always been Lancelot to her. From the moment he could choose his own name, he’d been Lance. Their families had taken forever to respect it, but Karissa had always been supportive of his choice. 

“You can go for a walk, of course. But... the notary is coming at 3:30. Please.. I need you to sign this with me.”

As he rounded the corner of the block, the hospital coming into view, he wiped angrily at his eyes. Fine. He didn’t need her. He’d go back to New York. He’d get over her and prove her right. He would be just fine without her. ... He had to be.
