Not sure if I was to put this in messages or not but what is the difference between those 4 Lupins (aside from the color of their jackets)?
ooc // Aside from jacket color, there’s not too much of a difference other than writers’ takes and the eras he is present in.
Green jacket starts off serious and grows into the goofy thief we all know and love, much thanks to the directors who stepped in mid-way. You might know them as the creators of Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki! Their influence aimed to make Lupin less adult-rated and more family-friendly. This one is a product of the early-1970s.
Red jacket is goofy all the way through, and you can tell when they started running out of ideas by just how ridiculous the episodes start to become (I’m looking at you, “1999: A Popcorn Odyssey”), though maybe that’s just what Lupin’s life is: ridiculous. This series is from 1977 and finishes off in 1980.
Pink jacket is as if Lupin snorted cocaine and the entire series is his drug trip. It’s a lot of fun, though! But the styles changed drastically, not just from the previous red jacket incarnation, but also throughout the series itself. You just gotta take it one episode at a time! A mid-1980s production, it’s a strange set of episodes but a helluva lotta fun to watch!
Blue jacket is the most recent two series and the only two series in the main franchise to carry a plot for the most part. Modern technology is updated and Lupin dabbles in some darker topics. 30 years after Part III (pink jacket) is when we see our first blue jacket episode, taking place in 2015. The most recent series came out in 2018.
The bottom line: Lupin has evolved over the years from serious to goofy to a mixture of both and while that may be a fact, he’s still the same Lupin the Third that everyone adores from series to series, jacket to jacket. A witty, snarky genius of a thief who can steal anything he sets his sights on. The only difference is who writes him.
(Note: I’m not counting in this the spin-off series ‘The Woman Called Fujiko Mine’!!)
