Summary:
When Bucky is hit by a spell and de-aged to six-years-old, Steve brings him home, knowing he’s the only one who can care for him. Wracked with guilt, Steve initially ignores Bucky to focus on getting the spell reversed. Until a close call leads to a near disaster, and Steve is forced reevaluate his priorities; the little boy now in his care and what he needs from Steve.
With help from Scott Lang and the rest of his teammates, Steve embraces the role of guardian. He makes mistakes, but also learns to see the world through a child’s eyes, rediscovering things not just about Bucky, but himself as well. As the days pass into weeks filled with trips to the zoo, giant teddy bears, and the sounds of Bucky’s giggles, Steve is faced with a difficult choice; allow Bucky to grow up happy and free, never knowing what his future holds, or reverse the spell and turn him back into an adult, with all the pain that life entails. Either choice will come at a cost, one both of them, but especially Bucky, will have to pay. But maybe, just maybe, with a little bit of luck, they’ll find their way and remember not only their love for each other, but how to play, carrying that new spark with them into the future and whatever it may hold.

Bucky looked between the two of them and the phone in his hands, chewing on his lower lip, cookie momentarily forgotten.
“You’ll really come if I call?” he finally asked.
“We really will,” Sam promised. “And it’s OK if you say yes now then change your mind later. You can still call us and we’ll come get you right away.”
Bucky chewed on his lip some more, fingering his phone, before he eventually nodded. “OK.”
“Are you sure?” Sam doublechecked.
Bucky nodded again. “But only if he stops being a jerk.”
“He can be a really big one sometimes, can’t he?” Sam grinned.
“Not anymore I won’t, I promise,” Steve swore. And thanks a lot Sam.

Summary:
Ever since DC, things haven’t been easy for Bucky Barnes. HYDRA stole everything from him, even his voice, and two months later he’s barely surviving as he struggles to pull the few scraps of himself left into a cohesive whole.
Until he gets his hands on a blanket and everything changes. Fascinated by its color and softness, he begins a journey he never would have imagined. Taken in by a stranger who teaches him to knit, Bucky slowly discovers he is so much more than a dropped stitch in the fabric of life. With time, patience, and the help of a few who have had their eyes on him for a long time, Bucky begins to turn himself into something stronger, softer and more beautiful than before, weaving a tapestry of friendship, laughter and love warm enough to embrace the entire world, fix old wrongs, and wrap around the only other person who never stopped believing in him.
Warnings: This story contains a mute Bucky, lots of blankets, scoodies and pompoms, Greek food and a demon kitten. It also contains a Steve who is still too stupid not to wear a hat when it’s cold out, but is as devoted to Bucky as ever, wanting nothing more than to spend the rest of his days snuggling beneath blankets.

It was soft.
That was the first thing his brain told him as he rubbed the corners of the blanket between his fingers. But carefully, gently, because it was soft, and something, some distant, unknown instinct told him one needed to take care when they touched soft things, or else they would break.
He could not remember the last time anything in his life had been soft, or where that knowledge came from, but he was certain. Soft things needed to be treated with care.
The next thing he noticed was that it was blue. Not the blue of sunrises or sunsets, or…or a jacket maybe? No, not that blue, but the blue beneath the lids of a pair of eyes on the banks of the Potomac that remained closed as he walked away. He did not deserve that blue anyway; he knew it then and he knew it now.
He did not deserve this softness either, not after everything he had done. But maybe, just maybe, he could keep it anyway. No one was paying any attention to him, he was very good at making sure of that. And why would they? He was just another homeless bum after all, voiceless, faceless, easily ignored and even more easily forgotten. One of thousands in this city.
Somehow he ended up here, in this small basement of the Hands of Mercy Church in Astoria, Queens, digging through the discarded clothes and cast offs of other people’s lives searching for…he did not know, or even why he was there. Curiosity he supposed. He had heard others muttering about it in the soup kitchen he sometimes stopped in when his body reminded him to eat. And he read the flyer posted on the notice board in the library he occasionally spent time in when desperate for the quiet it offered, as well as an escape from the rain.

Steve never moved so fast in his life, leaping over the kitchen island and across the living room, snatching the gun from Bucky’s grip, turning as he landed to stare at him in horror.
“What the hell are you doing?” Steve shouted. Bucky’s own eyes were as wide as Steve’s, staring at him in shock. Steve had been so quick, acting on instinct, and the resulting force of his speed threw Bucky back into the couch.
“Where the hell did you find this?” Steve’s heart was racing, his pulse pounding in his ears. Bucky had been holding a gun, and if Steve had looked up a second later, who knew what might have happened next, the damage unimaginable.
Bucky didn’t say anything, just continued to stare at him, face pale.
“Answer me, goddammit!” Steve demanded.
“It was just there, in the cushions! I was looking for the remote thing and I found that instead. I never seen one before, and I just wanted to look at it,” he squeaked in a high voice.
Oh Jesus Christ, Jesus-fucking-Christ! As an adult Bucky was a paranoid motherfucker on a good day, constantly checking the windows and locks on the door. Steve knew he’d stashed all sorts of weapons throughout the apartment and it normally didn’t bother him. If that was what Bucky needed to feel safe, Steve would never deny him that. But with all that happened over the past few days, other worries consuming his thoughts, Steve had completely forgotten about Bucky’s stockpile.
But this Bucky was a child, and children had curious minds and even curiouser hands, so of course he would explore his environment. And once he discovered the gun, he’d be fascinated, wanting to see what it was and did.

That in spite of how he can’t stop chewing his fingernails bloody, the never ending nightmares chasing him out of bed, and the way merely seeing ice sends him into a panic, he’s fine.
But when his latest mission with The Avengers goes horribly wrong, Steve can no longer keep lying, not even to himself.
Diagnosed with PTSD and placed on medical leave, initially Steve is resentful, stubbornly refusing the idea there’s anything that can make it better. Until Sam suggests a Service Dog, and introduces him to James Buchanan Barnes, a fellow vet and trainer who swears one of his dogs can help, if only Steve can summon enough bravery to take a leap of faith and accept a four-legged companion in his life.
What follows is a long and winding journey of fear, doubt and self-recrimination. But also hope, acceptance and redefining what it means to be a hero, as Steve finally faces the issues that have been haunting him his entire life.
There is also a lot of fur, conversations with dogs, and a cross-country road trip, as Steve rebuilds his life and maybe, just maybe, falls in love along the way.

“Crate?” Steve furrowed his brow.
“All of our dogs are crate trained. It’s a good practice to have in case you want that option,” Bucky answered.
“Why would I?”
“Lots of reasons. Maybe you’re going to do some housecleaning and want her out of the way. Or maybe you don’t want her sleeping in bed with you at night,” Bucky explained.
“So I’m supposed to what? Lock her up?” Was that something people actually did? Lock their dogs up in cages? He didn’t know anything about pet care, but the idea didn’t feel right to him.

What follows is a long and winding journey of fear, doubt and self-recrimination. But also hope, acceptance and redefining what it means to be a hero, as Steve finally faces the issues that have been haunting him his entire life.
There is also a lot of fur, conversations with dogs, and a cross-country road trip, as Steve rebuilds his life and maybe, just maybe, falls in love along the way.
Chapter 45
Snippet:
“Oofah!” Bucky gasped, then picked up the child, a small boy, in his arms. “Hey there Little J. How’s it going? Although maybe I should start calling you Big J. You’ve grown so much since I last saw you.” Bucky smacked his cheek with a kiss.
“I know! I’m almost as big as you now!” he beamed. He had a mop of copper colored curls sprouting from his head, tawny skin, and whisky brown eyes, the same shape as Bucky’s. “And hi Suki. I really want to pet you, but I know I can’t, because you’re wearing your vest and that means you’re working.”
“And you’re still as smart as ever, I see,” Bucky kissed him again, earning a giggle. “Where’s your mom?”
“Right here,” a woman said from behind them. “And what have I told you about running off like that Jamie?”
“I didn’t run off. I ran to Uncle Bucky ‘cos I saw him first, like I told you I would,” Jamie said.
“You did indeed,” Rebecca conceded with a smile. “Now let Uncle Bucky put you down so I can have a turn.”
Bucky carefully placed Jamie on the ground, then faced his sister and opened his arms. “Hey there Rat Face.”
