Summary:

Bucky drops a makeshift package in Steve’s lap. It’s as damp as everything else. “Merry Christmas,” he says.

And so here they are, stuck defending Bastogne.

They ran out of their rations more than a week ago, so Bucky must have saved this particular cigarette only to give it to him. Steve gulps through a lump in his throat. These days anything makes his eyes water, fuck it. It must be the bombs. Fucking von Lüttwitz. Who the hell attacks on Christmas Eve? He blinks and sniffs, wiping his nose on the back of his glove in the vain hope that Bucky hasn’t noticed.

Bucky clicks his tongue and Steve throws him a quick look. He wiggles his eyebrows and mouths, Crybaby .

Steve flips him off.

In doing so, the second object, the weird one, almost falls in the snow.

“Hey! Pay attention, I slaved for that.”

“What the hell is this?”

“Let me guess,” Bucky starts, heaving up two bags of sand and maneuvering them on the edge of the foxhole in order to position the rifles. “That’s not the 179th that should cover our flank.” Steve discards the binoculars and grabs the rifle Bucky’s handing him. “Are the 179th wearing fashionable gray overcoats?” “Nah,” Bucky looks through the scope. “179th’re from Oklahoma.” “Then those are Nazis coming after us, Buck.”

Hello! This fic was inspired by this Tumblr post by turtle-steverogers, who probably has no idea who I am. This inserts itself in the long list of me taking inspiration from creative people who write creative stuff on Tumblr. So thank you for coming up with this image! Thanks to my beta, Lillaby, who went through this faster than The Flash to allow me to post it on the anniversary of the Americans holding the fort on the Via Anziate in 1944. Enjoy!

“You know,” Morita says after a minute. “You two are fucking terrifying.”

Bucky leans against the frame of the back of the truck and grins an innocent grin. “I have no idea what you’re talking about”

“Fuck you, Barnes.”

“Hey! Respect for your NCO.”

“Fuck you, Sergeant Barnes.”

Steve laughs softly. Bucky feels warm.

“Gabe’s radioing with HQ,” he goes on, wrapping some gauze around the leg of the boy. It’s a clean shot, went right through. He’ll be all right. Hopefully, he’ll be one of the lucky ones who’ll get a free ticket back home. “Lucas wants me to go back with the wounded. Make a show of it. Another ‘Captain America rescues our brave men’.” He grimaces. “Can’t risk me dying here.” 

Steve’s disgusted expression says it all. He won’t budge. 

Bucky doesn’t answer right away. He finishes patching up the kid, makes sure the men on the makeshift medic truck are all set, then hits the side twice. The truck starts with a rush and a roar and leaves.

“Well, that was the last one,” he says, looking at it with his hands deep in his pockets, hiding the caked mud and blood. He then looks at Steve, feigning an educated surprise. “Aw, shucks,” he deadpans, then winks. “Oops.”

Steve’s frown becomes a face-splitting grin, like sunrays cutting through the clouds. “You’re a punk.”

Bucky raises his eyebrows so much he’s sure they disappear into his hairline - oh, I am? me? is my name steven grant rogers?

Steve’s straight up giggling now, hands on his knees, as if Bucky just said the funniest thing ever. When he looks up, covered in grime and soot, it’s like nothing has ever changed between them. No serum, no war, no Zola. Bucky doesn’t know what his face is doing, but Steve frowns, still smiling, and it’s soft and fond - what?

Bucky shakes his head, feeling tenderness down to his bones. “Let’s go back. I can’t wait to see you get in over your head again.”

They complete the mission. They go back to London. Steve writes the report.

Sgt. James B. Barnes is presumed Killed in Action as of 7 February 45, following a fall from an estimated height of 100 feet into a ravine behind enemy lines on the 6. Recovery was not possible due to enemy presence and mission constraints.

That night, he goes to the Whip and Fiddle after curfew and tries to get drunk. He’s not able to do that either.  You are not enough. He writes a condolence letter to the Barneses. He feels it’s only fair that he does it in the same place where he convinced Bucky to sign his own death sentence.
