An extract from a letter from John Pulman to Sir Robert Plumpton,which relays news about the recent trials of Perkin Warbeck and the Earl of Warwick, written on the 21st Nov 1499. (Warbeck had been tried the day before.)

Richard didn’t like that he and the other man had to speak through the hole in the ceiling. Well, for Richard’s room, that was the ceiling. For the other man, it was the floor. And he did curse when he didn’t feel comfortable about something. His aunt Margaret scolded him when he used dirty words. She used to tell him that dirty words were not supposed to fit a Prince.

“Now you do sound like aunt Margaret.“ Richard commented. From time to time, he looked up at the ceiling, trying to figure out how the other man looked like, but there was no point in doing so. He couldn’t catch any damn spot. Sometimes, he could swear that he saw the other’s ear, but he was never sure.

“They better see that there is no point in keeping us in different chambers.“ he commented with a shrug of his shoulders. “They have rats in this room“ Richard knew that rats would eventually bring disease. But maybe this was Henry Tudor’s intentions. To let him get ill and rot in the tower whilst he did whatever he liked with his sister and the Crown.

“I m-met aunt Margaret once.” Edward rolled over onto his back as he mused over bygone days, though his ear was still close enough to the hole for sound to travel. “She came back to England to visit us. King Edward thought it was a very special occasion, and so he bought m-me some n-new shoes.” He lifted up a leg to inspect his current footwear. No new shoes had been granted him for some years, and though his feet had stopped growing by now, he had scuffed his shoes so much that the leather was wearing away and the stitching was barely holding it together.

“Rats are nothing!” he replied, and laughed, as though he finally had a secret of his own to share. In his excitement, he rolled over again, cupping his hands around his mouth and whispering harshly through the hole: “They have a lion here, you know - in the m-men-ag-er-ie.” He stressed each syllable separately, for menagerie was a long word and it had taken a long time to learn it. In truth, it was not as though the collection of exotic animals at the heart of the Tower of London was any kind of secret - the beasts could probably be heard from the opposite bank of the Thames - yet for a young man who had grown up within the Tower walls, the roar of that lion was a sound he felt he knew better than most.

Four similarities between mun and muse:

1) We’re both thought to be quite naive. 2) We’re both Christian. 3) We’re both in our early twenties (working from his age at death). 4) His trial record suggests he quietly went along with a lot of things in order to keep his friends. Clearly I’ve not gone as far as treason, but I have a tendency to do this too.

Four differences between mun and muse:

1) He was the younger sibling of two (who survived infancy), whereas I’m the eldest. 2) Any potential he had to become a powerful political player was taken away from him very early (even if you accept he was never going to be 2nd Duke of Clarence, the Warwick and Salisbury inheritance was formidable). Meanwhile I - thank God - have had amazing opportunities that haven’t been taken away from me yet. 3) I’ve never had a mental health problem. Though there’s debate about Warwick’s state of mind both before and after his years in the Tower, his years of near-isolation seem to have taken their toll by 1499. 4) He (in my opinion) was no scholar but enjoyed practical tasks. I’m the opposite.

WHAT’S YOUR HONEST OPINION ABOUT YOUR MUSE?: He was born into an unfortunate set of circumstances and no one in his story comes off well.Clearly Henry VII was ultimately responsible for Warwick’s predicament, since it was Henry who had him locked away, and although doing so did backfire on him with the Simnel and Wilford conspiracies (among other smaller, less politically sensitive ones) it was probably for the best, as far as the Tudor regime was concerned.

 It’s a shame that the period when Warwick was least of a threat to Henry VII (the 1490s, when Warbeck took over as Enemy No. 1) was when he was entering his most formative years. Now in his late teens, had he been released, even in a limited capacity, he would have been expected to perform some of the roles of an earl, and so might have been able to amass a decent following among his retainers. Given that Henry let Warwick witness one or two formal documents quite a while after the Simnel rebellion at least raises the possibility that Henry might have been considering releasing Warwick (on a short leash) at some point. Were it not for the Warbeck problems and then the whole William Stanley thing, it’s fascinating to wonder whether Warwick might have been allowed to live a similar life to his de la Pole cousins. For fictional purposes in particular, this raises the question of how ambitious or gullible Warwick might have been, given the opportunity.

WOULD YOU DATE YOUR MUSE?: No.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE KINDS OF THREADS?: Political! But innocent fluff is also lovely.

ARE YOU A SELECTIVE ROLEPLAYER?:  Not especially.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSE (IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE)?: Ohhhh, dear... Warwick is probably most consistently enjoyable to write and think up headcanons for. But Stanley is by far the most fun and rewarding to research, and I feel Cranmer inspires my best writing.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THE FANDOM?: A call was put out for an Edward of Warwick back when the White Queen RP community was going strong, and I was studying Henry VII’s reign for A Levels, so it seemed sensible to go for it.

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF STAYING WITH THE FANDOM FOR A LONG TIME?: I don’t see myself quitting in the foreseeable future, and the historical/TWQ fandom is full of wonderful people, so yes.

// The 24th May is actually the date when Lambert Simnel was crowned in Dublin, but as I failed to get my act together last week, I'm using today to remember that one time when the ten-year-old Warwick was let out of the Tower to prove to the world that he was 1) not a fake and 2) not dead.

I'll be posting a series of open starters set at St. Paul's Cathedral or the Earl of Lincoln's residence, which was where Warwick was allowed to talk to people.

This is targeted specifically at people with whom I've never roleplayed before (mutuals or not, or historical or not, it doesn't matter!) but of course, existing partners can reply because you're all amazing.

All these posts are queued because I steer clear of Tumblr at weekends, but I'll get to them first thing on Monday.

3rd May 1456 - Margaret of York, Duchess of Burgundy, is born.

Sister of Edward IV and Richard III, she is best known for her support of both Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck, pretenders to the English throne. She supplied Simnel's invasion with money and mercenaries, and gave credence to Warbeck's conspiracy by claiming that he was indeed her nephew, Richard, Duke of York.

She shares her birthday with her mother, Cecily Neville, Duchess of York (3rd May 1415).
