I was trying to find out what that note was referring to and I came across some of my Neil Dudgeon Lestrade screencaps instead so that’s reminded me
remembering that he did play Lestrade and watching that again not that long ago has kind of given me a new interest in Lestrade? I mean I don’t think in general Lestrade is like... the dimwit some people try to portray him as he’s just a lot more conventional and doesn’t tend to think outside the box so much because he’s an ‘official’ detective but really when it comes to his intelligence and nature he’s probably like Watson, not brilliant in the same way as Holmes is but he has to be pretty smart to get where he is as well as having this dogged determination, and he is also clearly intelligent enough to know when he needs help.
It was just really that... Lestrade isn’t a character I’ve ever had that much reason to think about or write about, I think I’ve only written one fic involving Lestrade before, and he didn’t interest me that much in himself overall and still doesn’t in the sense that... I’m not going to be writing reams of fic about him suddenly or something, but I did include him in one fic in my Lyric series and I do like the idea of him confronting Moran and being able to mostly hold his own against him (also the idea of him understanding completely that Moran is queer, and him not caring about that at all except for how it possibly impacts on Adair’s murder).
But I’m not saying this solely because I developed A Thing for Neil Dudgeon, I also just like his Lestrade especially his air of constantly being on the brink of having a slight meltdown mostly because he’s exasperated or perplexed by Holmes (which is probably very accurate for most people who have regular contact with Holmes). And I can imagine him holding his own against Moran (and doing so without actually resorting to beating the shit out of him).
Anyway, look at his slightly perplexed face, I love him:
