“Now, why’d ya have to go and bring her up?” Austin grows quiet shaking his head. Tipping his head back he shot gunned the rest of the beer, clearing his throat when he finished. “Ya know I’ve known that girl since we were basically in diapers. She was my best damn friend long before I even realized who pretty girl could be, ya know back when they had cooties.” He chuckles shaking his head. “I wanted to marry that girl, I wanted to spend the rest of my life with my best friend and I really thought I was gonna have that. Ya know someone to come home to when I was home on leave, someone to video chat with, hell I would have even written some sappy love sick letters that all the guys in my platoon would have roasted me for if they got their hands on. Ya know that whole living for something bigger than yourself feeling. I had that, for a moment. Things just.... they don’t work out sometimes. Maybe it was for the best, she was always so much more than this little ass town. Figured she marry a doctor or lawyer or wall street banker and live in the big city.” Austin paused looking down at this empty beer, a look of regret. “Shit.”
