❛ if the monster always dies at the end of the book, why am i still alive? ❜

What kind of question was this? Serious was rarely the subject when it was just the two of them, springing this up because of a manga series she was recommending? Something was on his mind.
“Maybe it’s not the end of the book. I know a lot of series that went on far too long and it became a terrible mess of money milking.”
Paper book left to fall to the floor as she slowly got up, standing in front of him before leaning down for an eye level view. From media galore she knew the steps and tricks to helping soothe someone, or show comfort despite having never done so before, but in the important moments her brain blanked completely. She improvised.
Her forehead lightly pressed against his own, gripping shoulders to make sure he didn’t get the chance to get up and make light of this before she really tried to help.
“What makes you think you’re the monster, though? You’ve read the same manga as me, you know those plot twists. A traitor to the protagonist, the big bad you see sneaks of every so often, those are the monsters. They’re conniving, cruel, calculated. You’re just a dense guy wanting to do the right thing. Sure, it screws up every so often. So what? We all do it! You calling me a monster?”
Slowly she pulled away from Ryuji, taking a seat on the bench across from him. Despite the heavy atmosphere she tried for a smile. It was very easy to see how forced it was, but she didn’t give up on the idea for a second.
“I wouldn’t be around monsters anymore, not after everything real ones did to my family. So would you take my word on that?”
