JAKE  .  FUCK  .  OPEN  THE  FUCK  UP  .  head  pressed  against  the  wood  of  the  door  ,  five  used  his  fingers  to  fish  the  shrapnel  from  his  stomach  .  wincing  as  he  let  his  head  rap  against  the  door  .  praying  that  his  ...  friend  ?  was  jakes  his  friend  ?  five  didn’t  know  .  ACQUAINTANCE  ?  would  that  be  ....  he  was  quibbling  over  the  stupid  shit  now  &&  that’s  when  five  knew  he  was  in  danger  .  he  wasn’t  able  to  focus  on  the  task  at  hand  .  &&  right  now  the  task  at  hand  was  to  FUCKING  SURVIVE  .  not  worry  about  whether  ....  whether  the  limo  driver  was  a  friend  or  not  .  his  eyes  were  going  together  ,  &&  blurring  around  the  edges  as  he  dropped  the  shrapnel  piece  .  it  hit  the  floor  with  a  soft  clatter  .  five’s  head  SHIFTED  as  the  door  opened  ,  grasping  at  the  doorframe  to  steady  himself  .  “  sorry  ,  i  uh  ...  i  didn’t  know  who  ...  where  else  to  go  .  couple  of  ----  couple  of  stitches  &&  i’ll  be  al’ight  ,  ”

JESUS  SHITTING  CHRIST  ABOVE  .  if  there  was  a  hell  then  this  was  it  .  fucking  hell  .  fuck  .  fuck  .  fuck  .  fuck  fuck  ....

he  hadn’t  a  lot  of  options  .  family  SCATTERED  ,  little  to  no  fucking  friends  [  okay  no  friends  ,  he  was  a  shitty  person  to  be  friends  with  .  god  why  was  he  like  this  ?  okay  .  okay  .  don’t  overthink  it  .  blinking  through  the  front  door  ,  using  the  last  of  his  energy  ,  five  slumped  against  the  wood  &&  panted  for  a  moment  ,  throwing  the  bullet  ridden  briefcase  to  one  side  &&  hissing  slightly  as  his  body  REACTED  to  everything  .  stupid  pathetic  frame  .  that’s  what  it  was  .  slumped  down  ,  five  leaned  back  into  the  wood  ,  his  hand  going  around  his  torso  before  glancing  over  .  “  i  didn’t  have  anywhere  else  to  ...  to  go  ,  ”  he  said  quietly  looking  up  at  her  .

THE  SHUT  UP  WAS  ABRASIVE  &&  RUDE  ----  not  unlike  how  sometimes  diego  came  across  ,  &&  then  followed  by  a  hug  which  felt  a  little  stifling   .  but  it  definitely  interrupted  five’s  stream  of  consciousness  ,   to  which  he  was  rattling  off  with  some  PROFICIENCY  some  of  things  he  had  seen  .  the  interruption  caused  him  to  realize  that  he  had  been  maybe  just  speaking  far  too  intently  .  five  blinked  ,  unsure  what  to  do  ,  &&  frankly  a  little  unnerved  by  the  whole  being  TOUCHED  .  he  struggled  to  recall  the  last  time  he  was  shown  any  form  of  physical  affection  &&  if  he  was  truly  honest  ,  he  was  a  little  uncomfortable  with  it  .  muffled  against  diegos  shoulder  ,  five  spoke  ,  only  to  be  INTERRUPTED  again  by  his  brother  who  told  him  that  he  was  attempting  to  comfort  him  &&  five  for  a  moment  felt  his  heart  drop  to  the  floor  .  

he  tried  pulling  away  but  was  met  with  a  TIGHTER  embrace  .  so  ,  instead  ,  five  decided  not  to  resist  ,  assuming  &&  hoping  that  diego  would  let  go  soon  .

he  did  not  .

THERE’S  AN  AWKWARD  SILENCE  THAT  PERMEATES  THE  AIR  AS  HE  &&  LILA  WALK  INTO  THE  HANDLERS  OLD  OFFICE  .  her  trappings  still  so  visible  ,  it  seemed  that  herb  had  not  yet  had  the  honour  (  or  rather  chance  )  to  pull  down  what  remained  of  her  short  &&  yet  terrifying  reign  in  the  commission  headquarters  .  he  was  still  feeling  the  pinch  from  seeing  his  older  self  die  ,  but  lila  had  asked  to  come  see  her  mothers  office  one  last  time  before  they  headed  back  to  hotel  obsidian  .  it  was  a  fair  trade  ,  given  that  this  was  the  one  place  lila  &&  the  handler  had  spent  much  of  their  time  scheming  &&  plotting  .  &&  whilst  five  had  very  little  interest  in  hanging  around  ,  especially  with  a  kugleblitz  hanging  over  their  head  ,  he  understood  the  IMPORTANCE  given  how  during  the  first  apocalypse  ,  he  had  found  himself  returning  to  the  same  spot  where  he  had  spent  his  youth  &&  had  seen  the  dead  bodies  of  his  own  family  .

lila  had  moved  around  the  snowed  in  office  ,  her  expression  still  &&  not  full  of  the  usual  light  that  it  often  carried  .  one  that  would  make  fun  of  five  or  poke  fun  at  the  situation  or  anything  in  between  .  instead  it  was  sombre  .  tender  &&  five  felt  a  pang  of  REGRET  .  he  knew  that  kill  order  was  weird  in  the  first  place  &&  even  more  bizarre  ,  how  the  handler  had  come  with  him  on  such  a  task  .  but  it  was  one  of  his  earlier  missions  ,  when  he  was  still  trying  to  prove  his  worth  to  the  commission  ,  so  didn’t  question  it  .

he  should  have  though  .  

perhaps  ,  amongst  the  WEAVE  of  things  he  had  done  ,  this  might  have  unfurled  into  a  lesser  play  of  disaster  .  he  wasn’t  sure  .  right  now  ,  he  wasn’t  sure  of  anything  .

as  lila  moved  around  her  mothers  old  desk  ,  her  hands  BRIEFLY  traced  across  some  crown  that  the  handler  had  probably  intended  to  wear  at  some  point  &&  five  sighed  ,  tucking  his  free  hand  into  his  pocket  .  

“  i’m  sure  she  loved  what  you  did  for  her  far  more  than  she  ever  loved  you  ,  ”  he  said  pointedly  before  letting  his  shoulders  lax  .  “  i’m  SORRY  .  you  should  never  have  been  in  that  position  to  start  with  ,  ”

NESTLED  DEEP  AGAINST  HIS  BED  ,  ELECTRODES  POOLING  FROM  HIS  HEAD  AS  DAD  WATCHED  BRAINWAVES  ,  five  snoozed  soundly  .  whilst  his  siblings  at  times  dreamt  of  the  missions  they  had  already  been  on  &&  had  succeeded  in  (  or  sometimes  failed  )  five  was  able  to  push  most  of  it  aside   &&  sleep  in  relative  calm  .  a  personality  trait  that  his  siblings  often  envied  &&  were  not  happy  about  .   so  ,  being  woken  up  in  this  manner  was  often  not  UNEXPECTED  .  but  he  did  often  miss  being  waken  up  by  something  far  more  polite  .  

the  thwack  hit  his  face  &&  caused  him  to  roll  too  far  in  the  opposite  direction  of  his  bed  ,  falling  off  the  edge  ,  he  was  just  awake  enough  for  his  instincts  to  take  over  &&  for  his  body  to  blip  &&  now  stand  behind  char  .  “  if  you  do  that  again  i’m  telling  MOM  ,  ”  he  muttered  sleepily  ,  mornings  not  being  his  thing  .

“You have a lot of experience with this.”

                                          “  MORE  THAN  I’D  CARE  TO  ADMIT  ,  ”  five  said  quietly  ,  his  hands  pushing  deep  into  his  pockets  .  he  wasn’t  sure  what  to  do  with  them  otherwise  .  his  eyes  cast  down  towards  her  as  she  sat  on  the  sofa  &&  he  stood  over  .  “  but  it  doesn’t  get  BETTER  ,  no  matter  how  many  times  you  go  through  it  .  i  am  sorry  though  ,  ”  his  apology  was  sincere  .  truly  sincere  .  grief  was  ...  a  COMPELLING  emotion  .  much  more  complicated  than  anything  else  he  had  ever  felt  ,  because  above  it  all  ,  above  just  missing  them ,  was  guilt  .  regret  .  pain  .  sadness  .  anger  .  resentment  &&  not  understanding  .  five  had  felt  it  too  many  times  &&  he  wasn’t  entirely  sure  if  he  was  ...  the  RIGHT  person  to  talk  to  about  this  .  considering  he  sat  with  his  first  round  of  grief  for  forty-five  years  &&  it  drove  him  to  near  desperate  measures  to  make  it  right  .  

he  pursed  his  lips  &&  looked  around  pointedly  .  “  how  ...  did  you  know  them  ?  ”  he  asked  .  pathetic  really  ,  but  he  was  trying  .  social  situations  had  never  been  easy  if  he  was  HONEST  ,  even  when  he  was  a  kid  .

"It's good to have you home."

                                                           FOR  A  MOMENT  ,  STEPPING  INTO  THE  BUILDING  IS  A  LITTLE  OVERWHELMING  .  &&  five  felt  his  heart  rise  to  his  throat  .  he  wasn’t  sure  how  his  family  would  react  to  him  coming  back  .  a  little  less  when  it  came  to  char  .  after  all  ,  that  was  a  little  more  tangled  &&  complicated  .  so  when  she  stood  in  front  of  him  ,  staring  at  him  ,  five  couldn’t  pull  his  eyes  from  her  &&  at  the  same  time  ,  he  so  desperately  didn’t  want  to  look  at  her  .   his  EXPRESSION  was  torn  .  a  seeping  sadness  .  hands  in  his  pockets  ,  he  waited  for  char  to  do  something  ----   but  nothing  came  .  &&  he  wasn’t  sure  why  he  was  disappointed  .  it’s  not  like  he  &&  char  had  been  ever  any  good  at  displaying  emotion  .  so  instead  ,  they  stood  AWKWARDLY  looking  at  each  other  .

“  i  MISSED  the  funeral  ,  ”  five  said  lamely  .  “  was  it  any  good  ?  i  figure  the  old  man  would  have  loved  to  say  his  usual  I  TOLD  YOU  SO  ,  glad  i  missed  that  .  ”
