Today is the day, 95 years ago, when the Ådalen Shootings occurred.

The military stopped a sympathy strike procession on May 14th, 1931, and it resulted in several deaths as they opened fire when the townspeople refused to disperse. My great uncle was present there, and walked at the front of the procession. He almost died that day, but others were not so fortunate.

We should remember the strife of the days of old when not everyone had a living wage, any pension to speak of, or safe working conditions. We should also remember that not everyone to this day enjoy these rights and privileges, and there is much work left still to be done.

My great uncle was present there, and walked at the front of the procession. He almost died that day, taking a bullet to the chest.

This year, the Swedish government are implementing a new law which will limit workers’ right to strike. The so-called Social Democratic government are implementing this new law. Striking is one of the few weapons workers have to get their voices heard, and now they’re taking it away.

This day, we remember the 14th of May 1931, Ådalen, where the Swedish military opened fire on striking workers, killing five and wounding another five.

People died for our rights, the same rights that the government are now voting away to appease the capitalists.

If the workers take a notion, they can stop all speeding trains; Every ship upon the ocean they can tie with mighty chains. Every wheel in the creation, every mine and every mill, fleets and armies of the nation, will at their command stand still.

Taken at a place called Ådalen. Here, in 1931, a conflict between the military and workers on strike got a bloody end. 5 people, one of which was just a bystander, lost their lives to the machine guns. After that a long debate happened and all parties agreed on from that moment on the army could never again be used to stop demonstrations/strikes in Sweden.

This is a statue over that event. The open fire picked off after one of the army horses reared up and throw the rider off. None knows why it reared up but it was most likely because of one of the demonstrating men threw something at it.
