PAIRING: Übel x Male Reader (Romantic) (Fluff)
SUMMARY: Übel’s empathy towards (Y/N) develops into her newest fixation.
“Another day, another sad excuse of a robbery.” She towered over the hunched man, watching as each cut she added to his torso gargled more blood out of him. Each drop slowly drowning him as his eyes grew dim. “Here you were hoping to top a First-Class mage…and you can’t even block a simple swing.” She mocked him.
His comrades, laid out around him, writhed in agony. Most missing a limb or two. Vital organs just barely avoiding a fatal cut. She gazed out at her masterpiece, smirking as she stretched her knotted muscles.
“Übel…y-you damn sadist. You’re a mon-monster!” The lone survivor screamed in anger? terror? She couldn’t quite pint point it. Übel didn’t feel like empathizing with these lunatics anyways.
“Mmmm. I don’t know gramps. Ganging up on a defenseless woman ain’t exactly the most humane thing; for all I know you could’ve been demons in disguise.” She said it flatly, her stare like a thousand sharp knives cutting through flesh.
Through bone.
Through organ.
Through sanity.
She stalked the man, his voice only able to mutter hisses as he crawled under a tree, desperate to escape. His strength was leaving him, the wounds finally starting to take their toll on his soul. Übel crouched down, her smile holding no guilt or remorse.
“Man, I really wanna know why you attacked me. It wouldn’t kill you to help keep the conversation going, ya know! I can only talk to myself so much before I look crazy.” Her smile didn’t even reach her eyes. “If this is how it’s gonna be than I might as well take you out of your misery—”
“Please,” the man held up his hand, signaling for her to unhand her weapon, “please…leave this dying man with his dignity. I’ll tell you everything if you do.” His begging wasn’t offering her much…
…but it certainly beat all that fighting being for nothing.
She gripped her spear and pointed it at the man, smiling at him before thrusting it into the ground beside them with harsh force. He trembled in response, taking a deep, painful breath to steady his pulse.
“Speak pops.” She threatened.
“There is a man…a devil, far out from here. A cult of ex-slaves worship him; and that damn devil is capable of brining the demons slain back to life!” He coughed, his excitement getting the better of him. “There’s a reward for killing him, but only a First-Class mage is allowed to take the commission; without one nobody can take him on legally and claim the prize.”
Übel’s eyes widened at his words, her brows no longer as relaxed as before. “Wait…so that means?”
She smirks, “You weren’t trying to kill me?”
The dying man nodded, his skin turning gray as he took shorter breaths, no longer making an audible noise. “We…just wanted…to recruit you.”
Übel stared at the man as he finally died; his hand, that was once clutching his heart, now fallen to his side. She huffed, a small glow lingering in her eyes.
“Sorry. My bad.”
…
A month had passed of Übel traversing the terrain to hunt down the fabled devil. The money was a nice bonus, but her main priority was seeing through her curiosity. That man she murdered would’ve died for nothing. Despite trying not to, she did grow some amount of sympathy for the man; not quite empathetic, but still strong enough that she felt bad his death was a mistake.
She took a deep breath as she stomped her final few steps atop a mountain. The air was thin and patchy, each step forward making her more and more lightheaded. Übel’s skin shivered a stark contrast to area around her; the sun shining bright yet the frost on her skin painfully cold.
Übel was losing her footing. She fell down to her knees, the sheer cold holding her in place as the bright sun boiled her skin. She could feel her body burning up like a twig in a fire.
“Damn…I’m…,” her eyes, hazed over, glanced at a long arm in her peripheral; unnaturally long, in fact, it gripped her torso like rubber. “I’m…not dying yet.”
She was turned over, the once blinding light of the sun, now shadowed away by his towering figure.
“Good.”
…
She woke up in a sudden jolt, the room decorated in an eccentric fashion. The interior was almost annoying in a sense. She was tempted to cut it down into pieces. But her instincts told her that she wasn’t alone.
“Don’t mean to be rude, but you’ve gotta fire whoever designed this room. It really hurts my eyes.” Übel said with a smile as she sauntered off to the door hanging ajar. She stood adjacent to it, her hand gliding over the handle as she pulled it open more; what was revealed left her with a slight shock.
“You’re awake.” Draht said.
Übel glanced at her spear, laid out under the bed. “And according to Frieren, you’re supposed to be dead.”
He took a step forward, she took several back. The distance gave her the perfect opportunity to get a good look at him; the same as usual, aside from the glowing sun marking on his arms.
“I was reborn. Not fully a demon, but more so a devil. And with this newfound existence—” Draht narrowly dogged Übel’s strike, restricting her arms momentarily with his strings.
She cut them easily. “No thanks. I don’t intend to be demon food.”
“And you won’t.” A new voice interrupted, kicking Übel in the face as she strutted forward. “Draht. You’re too passive; even with these new emotions, you ought to still have some control over yourself.” The glowing sun on her forehead seemingly shining even brighter as she scolded her companion.
“Of course, Linie.” He said softly. The devil pair stood in front of Übel, staring her down from across the room.
Then they surrendered, their arms folded behind their backs. “Normally we’d have killed you by now. But our newfound sympathy has made us feel bad for you lower life forms.”
Übel tightened the grip on her spear, eyes lax as she twiddled with her hair. “So you’re saying someone made you somewhat normal?” She almost chuckled. “Wanna introduce me to them? I’m kinda in a hurry for a reward.”
Draht scowled. “You insolent human! His grace saved you and your mind is still on taking his head!” Linie signaled for him to halt his words, taking a cautious step forward herself.
“He revived us, and born anew we experienced more than we ever could’ve hoped to under Aura’s command. However—”
“Linie, Draht, is that anyway to greet a new friend!” His jovial voice echoed from down the halls. Yet his vivid glow couldn’t hide him, his body glowing bright like the sun as he skipped merrily down the hallway, a blindingly brilliant smile gracing their presence. “I know you’re still learning, but stalking someone as they sleep doesn’t set a good first impression.”
Both Draht and Linie grimaced, their faces contorting as they frowned at him; his “brightness” always knew how annoy them by just existing.
The young looking man marched up to the wide eyed Übel, bowing before her as he extended his hand. Flame shaped hair engulfed his face, his limbs visibly “looser” than they should be.
“Hello, Miss Übel. I’ve been expecting you.” He smiled. She smirked back, her hand tapping away impatiently on her spear as she eyed his neck up and down.
“I don’t recall introducing myself.” She teased.
He chuckled. “Oh, I know you.” He grasped her hand and spun her around, now dipping her as he gracefully took her weapon with ease and threw it across the room.
“For I am (Y/N): devil lord of Joy and Liberation!”
That was the start of your newfound relationship with Übel. A chaotic pairing with exhilaration at first sight, your excitement couldn’t be contained at having a new friend to antagonize; most humans ran away the moment they heard “devil” after all. But Übel stayed. By an obsession for your head, or her own growing curiosity, you couldn’t tell. And you didn’t bother to question; much to the dismay of Draht and Linie.
She constantly aimed for your head on various occasions; but your quick witted use of weaponry proved to be as strong as hers. It was like a dance to her. The sheer fun of back and forth between you two ignited a flame inside her. It got to the point where Übel stopped aiming for vital points; wanting to instead revel in the battle.
Übel could feel herself growing more attached as the days turned to months. Her perception of you changed from a devil lord to the man many of your followers boasted you as: a heroic and benevolent figure. Not that it impressed her or made her feel like a follower too; but Übel could easily see how all the slaves you freed would adore you. Especially since that kindness wasn’t limited to them. Your gentle touch reminded Übel of the time she spent with her sister.
It got to the point where she could tell she was empathizing with you more than usual. Normally she’d pick up someone’s skill, becoming friendly with them, and then move on with life. But your carefree and mischievous nature lured her in. The playfulness tickling her sides as she enabled your jokes, the stress free life calming her spirit to where everything felt like home again. Of course she wouldn’t stay forever; and yet the thought of never seeing you again always managed to deflate her mood.
“So you’ve come for my head again.” (Y/N) said with a sly smile, his composure calm as ever.
Übel stood before his throne where he sat, spear in hand as she huffed. “I’ve gotta make a living somehow. I’m on a journey.” She spoke the words so plainly, that same snark dancing out. Yet her eyes remained blank, as if she was following a script.
He snapped his fingers, “But you won’t kill me.”
Übel raised a brow, “Oh? What makes ya so confident?” She leaned forward, already ensnared in his web of mischief.
“Because…you love me.” He teased.
Her eyes blew wide, mouth slightly hanged open as she nearly lost her grip on her spear. Übel frowned, her face wrinkling as she scowled. She’d been ignoring it for the longest time. Acknowledging it meant fully accepting the emotions it brought with it; as well as the desire.
“Ahhh. Fine, ya got me. So, think I still can’t kill ya? Rubber isn’t all the hard to cut.” She swiftly gashed away the strings surrounding her, briefly glancing at Draht standing behind a pillar.
Rubber hands grabbed her arms and wrapped around her, restricting her movement entirely. Yet Übel didn’t put up a fight, instead grinning at the man leaning against her.
“And neither is a frosty exterior.”
