The void didn't like it up in the attic. It was too far from the ground, too far from the sands... It felt the connection between it and the rest of the world fade a little. It could only see inside this room. And that was horrible.

The figure noticed it nearly instantly. The black cloak swayed as he span away from where he was peering down into the rooms below.

Both stood in silence for a moment. Just watching the other. Waiting to see who would make the first move.

The man reached out carefully. A misty white, iridescent light grew around his black fingers, painted to blend in with the darkness all around. And then he touched it ever so gently in the center of its chest. The light dissipated. The void let the feeling spread for a moment.

"You're the person I keep forgetting," he said without moving his mouth.

"Yes," it answered.

He pulled his hand back to himself. "What are you?"

"This place."

It tried not to let the doubt seep into its thoughts. The man noticed anyway. They stood in silence for a moment.

Then, he nodded slowly, turning back to the small hole worn into the wooden flooring. Below, the survivor and the cleric, talking quietly while their 'friend' wasn't around.

"I don't recognise the newcomer."

The void stepped closer, peering over his shoulder.

"... He lives with the others," it answered. "Em, Spark, Threes."

"Threes?"

"The half-robot who ran off."

"He came back? Good." He squinted. "So this guy knows where they are."

"Yes. Very good sense of direction, too."

"And he's going to lead that murderer right to them."

The void paused. It felt emotions rising through its chest. It tried its hardest to ignore them. "He's a wildcard." It tilted its head a little. "Unpredictable even to himself."

The man glanced back. "You're implying I can trust him."

"I'm saying not to take anything he does at face value."

"But you think I can trust him."

It was quiet. Well, quieter. The void took a moment to try and control its thoughts and feelings.

"Why are you asking? You know you'll forget it all. If anything, I'm impressed you remember even the idea of me."

"I remember knowing someone." He paused. "And I remember that they're an ally. Enemy of my enemy, and all that..."

"I'm not an enemy to any of you."

He scoffed lightly. They both saw the figure hesitate down below as the cleric kept talking.

The man leant back from the hole. "I ask because I hope I'll remember the feeling." He studied the void for a moment. "I should follow them tomorrow, shouldn't I?"

It didn't answer.

The man nodded.
