It was one of those rare moments. A moment where things seemed to have some sense of normalcy to it. & Ingrid was still working, old habits died hard, after all. She wasn’t alone in that vice, though. That is, if it even was a vice in comparison to worse choices.
Jill worked just as much as Ingrid. One may even say that Jill worked harder, if that was even possible. Between files and pages upon pages of information, Ingrid took a caffeine break. This was the third one in the past six hours, & this time, she carried two mugs with her.
The sound of a full cup against the desk got Jill to blink.
“There you go. It’ll help.”
Ingrid offered a friendly smile. The smile of an ally. That was the only smile that Jill seemed to register properly. With a silent nod, Jill took the mug to take a long drink from it. She was letting her batteries charge up some more. & once they did, Jill looked up with a slight smile.
“What, you aren’t going to go have fun,
Hunnigan?”
She shook her head no, & the small talk they managed to share was more than enough to her. Ingrid had four reports to finish up before entering a few more updates to Leon’s file. It wasn’t going to be done on it’s own, only if she did it.
Hours later, & work completed, she heard a noise outside of her office. Her mind had already registered when others left. They had said their goodbyes to her while passing her office, & she returned the gesture. Her hand knew where the small caliber gun was that she kept for emergency protocol. As she stood up, she had it in her hands the closer she got to the door. It was once the door opened & a familiar face came into view, stumbling with a clumsy gasp, that she made sure her finger pulled the safety into place.
A loud thump, & both Ingrid and Jill were on the floor. This time, the fall was followed by two other sounds. The sound of liquid spilling out of mugs.
“Ah -- Fuck. That’s on me.”
Jill groaned, & a laugh broke the awkward silence from Ingrid’s half.
“No, it’s definitely on me.”
Ingrid laughed a bit harder, the coffee being on her sleeve. It was a nice break from what was usually going on. Their version of a break. It was just what they needed, too.
