His fascination with wood carving was new, but Isaac was determined to perfect the practice. When he wasn’t training or hunting, he sat with his knife and a soft piece of wood, carving it into the animals he’d see past the walls of New Eden. After many weeks and many tries, he finally carved something that resembled a bear. Proud as ever, he approached his father, holding the figure out to him. “It’s for you,” he said, all smiles. “Because you’re a papa bear.” / sonofedensgate
He had stood therewith crossed arms, ever the tall and intimidating Herald, watchingover the training of the next generation of Chosen. Most were strong. Some were still too weak, they would need to cull that part oftheirs.
Though Jacob’sattention was pulled away from the young Chosen and he looked down towhere his son stood. Hands outstretched and showing him a… carvedbear.
Jacob had seen theboy carving wood for the past weeks, months even. He had found itamusing at times, watching how overly focused Isaac had been sittingat the fire, almost biting his tongue off when he tried to carvesomething more delicate. Never had Jacob commented his carving, though. At first it had seemed senseless to him. Using a knife forthis. But he had remembered his own younger years… he had used tosometimes attempt and carve something for John. Figurines to playwith, toys, because never in all hell would Old Mad Seed have spent adime on his sons.
Though, Jacob surelyhad not been as talented as Isaac was. He reckoned their son had thisfrom Sara. An eye for details. For beauty.
Jacob glanced backto the training briefly, before crouching down to scoop Isaac up ontoone ar, so he could walk away and to a more private place. His otherhand reaching for the bear and taking it, turning it around so hecould look at it from every angle.
And it made a smileappear on his lips.
Isaac was just asmall boy yet. Curious and sweet. Innocent. And loving. Howeverdistant Jacob might sometimes appear to his own son – the boy hadnothing but unconditional love for him. And it almost seemedundeserved from Jacob’s view.
“You made this forme? All by yourself?”, he asked, waiting for Isaac to eagerly nod,all proud because of the incredulous tone Jacob had used. It madeJacob chuckle softly, as he sat down and let Isaac sit on his lap. They were alone here, behind some of the huts. And Jacob could justbe with Isaac without having to mind his role as Herald.
Brushing a hand overIsaac’s head, he pulled the boy closer to press a brief kiss to thetop of his soft blond hair, a hum rumbling in his chest.
“Thank you, Isaac... I think I never got something as pretty.”
