I walked up quiet; slow enough not to snap whatever thread was holding her together. I slid my arm around her waist, bending down just enough to kiss her temple letting her feel I was home.
“Hi, baby,” I whisper and just like that, she melts.
“Rafe,” she exhales, turning her head just enough to see me. Her eyes glistened and thankful, “You’re early.”
“Mhmm… And, you look happy to see me, pretty girl,” I whisper as I tilt her chin, pressing a kiss on her lips. “Not exactly sure I deserve that after bein’ gone so long. I'm sorry—”
“I’m sorry,” she whispers. “It’s a mess in here, I know.”
“It’s not, baby—It could be worse. I mean you've seen how this house looks when it’s just me and the kids…” She chuckles tiredly and nods, snuggling in a little closer. “Kids are gone for the night. Go upstairs, take a shower—take your time.”
“Rafe, I—”
“Nah, I didn't ask,” I chuckle lovingly. My baby just nods and disappears upstairs without a word.
The kitchen’s a disaster and I'd be lying if I said I didn't need it… the security—the reassurance of it all knowing that the woman who can do it all still needs me.
The sink’s full with pots and pans. Macaroni and cheese crusts in the bottom, strawberry stems discarded on the cutting board from snack time. Max’s football uniform is crumpled on the far end of the island, a sticky note that says wash me please stuck to the grass-scuffed jersey.
Next to it a broken toy held together with half-dried glue. And a chocolate stained printout labeled Mommy and Poppy’s Chocolate Chipper Cookies resting beside the towering heap of handmade desserts. On the fridge, the final request: a list of needed items in pink, glittery gel pen—Winnie’s must-haves for cheer camp—needed by 12 pm tomorrow.
I take a breath and get to work.
Tackling the dishes, tossing in Max’s laundry, dripping on a tiny dot of Krazy Glue where it’s still cracked. I open the Target app adding Winnie’s items from the list, to the mobile cart, with a 9 am pickup by yours truly; throwing in a bouquet of flowers to exchange the old, and that chocolate she loves.
Then I go upstairs, relishing the silence for myself as well. Thankful I've got nothin’ on the schedule but taking care of the women I can’t live without.
Steam hangs heavy, wrapping around me the second I step in the master bathroom. The mirrors are fogged up, lights dimmed low; the faint scent of her body wash drifting through the air. The white noise of the water echoes against the tub and through it I can hear her, not speaking, just breathing.
She looks so tired.
Not just physically but down to her bones. That kind of tiredness that settles in when you’ve been needed too many times; touched too much. The kind of tiredness where it’s been give give give and give some more without having a single thing done just for you.
I strip down, leaving my clothes pooled by hers, and step into the shower without a word. She stirs when she feels me behind her.
“Rafe—” She starts but I lean in, pressing a kiss on her forehead, wrapping my arm around her waist as I cup her cheek.
“Don’t worry, baby,” I murmur. “I’m not tryin’ to start anything I swear… What kind of husband would I be?” I whisper as I stroke her soft skin with my thumb and she leans into my hand. “Turn for me.” My hands rest on her hips, facing her back to me.
I grab the shampoo and she exhales the second my fingers touch her scalp.
I don’t dare rush. I couldn't if I tried. My hands work in slow, careful circles. Enough pressure to pull the rest of the tension loose without pulling her too far out of that quiet place she finally sank into.
My thumbs trace behind her ears, drifting down to the tight spots at the base of her neck. I work them gently and her soft little sighs just about break me.
She leans her weight into me and I take it gladly. The water runs over her, carving soft rivers down her skin before swirling around the drain and down. And with it, I swear, I feel the week washing off both of us.
“You did so good, baby,” I whisper. “Hate how tired you are. I’m sorry I wasn’t here.”
She doesn’t speak—just finds my hand and laces her fingers in mine.
“M’proud of you… I don’t know how you do it.”
Her bottom lip wobbles a bit like saying anything would tip her over the edge. So she just nods, cuddling a little closer to me.
I kiss her like I’ve got nowhere else to be; like all those unsaid I love yous I’ve been savin’ up just for her.
My forehead rests against hers; our breathing falling into a steady rhythm and for the first time all night, she smiles. A soft smile. A true smile. My girl.
And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better her hands lace around the back of my neck as she lifts on her toes and she kisses me. The kind that always makes the storm in my head calm enough for me to make it through rough waters. Like maybe she’s finally coming up for air herself.
A kiss that feels like finally coming home.
“I needed this,” she whispers against my lips.
“You always know exactly what I need… You're so good to me all the damn time, it’s gotta be exhausting.”
“I love it—”
“I love you, baby,” I mumble between tender, loving kisses.
“It’s weird,” Peter says suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence that fell over the lab, “Everyone says I look like my dad. They always have. But, like, I don’t really remember him.”
Tony’s brows furrow as he set down the solder, confused— Peter’s usually a tight lid. He’d spent hours just coaxing the real Vulture story out of the kid, a story that Tony isn’t one-hundred percent positive is the real one, but beggars, not choosers or whatever. “Where’s this come from?”
Peter’s back is to him, but Tony can still see the way the kid deflates.
“N— Nothing. It’s fine, it’s whatever— unimportant.” Peter mumbles but doesn’t pick his wrench back up.
Tony chuckles awkwardly, pulling his googles off. “Well, hold on, kid, I didn’t say stop, I don’t care, I was just confused as to what spurred on the whole dad thing. You’re usually pretty tight-lipped about that.”
“Just— something I’d been thinking about. I don’t know, it really doesn’t matter.” Peter dismissed, putting his head on his folded arms.
“Kid.” Tony shook his head fondly, “I want to know. Sorry if I made you feel otherwise.” He apologized, hand on Peter’s elbow.
Peeking through his arms, he examined Tony with deep-rooted distrust, but with a small, dying shimmer of hope. They stared at each other for a while as Tony tried to show his earnest curiosity through his expression. Peter was always better at that than Tony, his expressive eyes and all.
After what felt like an eternity, Peter finally spoke up, “Okay.”
“Okay,” Tony affirmed, hand still resting on Peter’s arm.
Exhaling, Peter picked at the loose threads on his sleeve cuff, “Cuz, like, when I was a kid, I remember not liking my dad as much as I liked my mom. I still loved him, obviously, but I had one of those weird kid grudges where if someone does something you don’t like, you have, like, a permanent vendetta against them until you forget about it because your brain is small and doesn’t understand, y’know?”
Tony nodded, because, no, Peter, I have no clue what you’re talking about, but, sure, kid grudges. V for Vendetta and all that.
“Yeah, anyways. It’s weird. I still have those feelings.” Peter shrugged.
Tony frowned slightly, “You still dislike him?”
“Sorta? Like I said, it’s weird. When someone dies, it's kinda like a time capsule. Like— all your feelings get solidified with the person. But also, it feels wrong to know they were flawed. Like, suddenly, when they die, you forget all the bad and just remember all the good, so when you remember that they had flaws or did stuff wrong, it's, like, wrong.” Peter rambles, eyes drifting about the lab.
“Wrong how?” Tony pressed.
Peter exhaled sharply, “Wrong, like when you’re eating a soft food, and something crunches in your mouth, but you know it’s all supposed to be soft, so you kinda pause for a second like,” Peter made a confused face before continuing, “But you’re also like, ‘eh, it’s already in my mouth and in the food so how bad could it be?’ And you ignore it and swallow, but there’s still a part of you that’s like ‘that’s not right.’ Kinda wrong. Do you get what I’m saying, or am I just…” He trailed off, gesturing with his hand through the air.
Tony’s quick to assure, “No, no, I get it. I’m— I’m understanding. Yo comprendo.” Tony smiled, feeling like this conversation wasn’t entirely over, but that there wasn’t much more to say. “What about the ‘look like your dad’ part. Where does that come into play?”
“Well, I mean, I don’t really remember my parents— well, I do. Sorta. I remember my dad’s scratchy beard, and my mom always smelled like a big garden. Very floral. She liked the color pink and didn’t like triangles. He liked science and trains. I think I got my ADHD from him.”
“Oh, a triangle hater. That’s new.”
“She didn’t— she didn’t hate them. She just wasn’t fond. Like, I don’t know, but you get it.” He waved Tony off, but his smile was genuine.
Tony wiped his fingers off with a towel. “Ehhh, you sure she also didn’t have ADHD or some sort of… thing?”
Nodding vigorously, Peter pushed himself up, “Pretty sure, though I wouldn’t be surprised.” He sniffed, “But, sometimes it’s weird because May will look at me and be like ‘you look so much like Richard.’ And I kinda just have to sit there and take it, because, sure. Didn’t know the guy, so I’m kinda just being compared to a rando. But May’ll also look at me and say, ‘oh that was a Mary face. You look like Mary when you make that face.’ Which, okay. Thanks?”
Tony pursed his lips, sighing. “I think for people who knew Richard and Mary, it’s kind of a way to see them still living. Like their faces are still moving and talking and smiling, and I think it’s like a reassurance.”
Peter’s brows creased, but he nodded, “I get that.”
“Peter.” Tony hesitated, worried he’d mess his next words up. That they’d come out wrong and make this worse. Ugh, emotions. “You haven’t done anything. You can’t control any of those. You are not at fault, in anyway. I think May’s just grieving and it coming through you. Sometimes, I grieve my mom through Pepper because they’re so similar. It’s small reminders. Nothing the other person can control, but it’s like they’re still here.”
Peter smiled a bit, shoulders lighter. “Okay. I can… understand that, I guess.”

let's see. to start off with, i am a firm believer that Trey Clover knits. look those hands are not just for baking. i'd say he's not an amateur knitter but lies somewhere at an intermediate level. his tension's a little uneven sometimes, especially when he's stressed, but it's a hobby for a hobby, a little something when he wants to keep busy but doesn't find himself in the mood for baking. his most common projects are probably just random squares of knit he uses as dishcloths that he made when he didn't want to think too much about patterns.
sewing for Deuce isn't a hobby per se, its just something he picked up while helping his mom out. his grandma probably taught him when he was young, but he didn't really care much about it during his delinquent days. something something it's just not cool cough. but post-delinquency clarity deucey picked it up just for mending the clothes he scuffed up while getting into brawls. he did pick up a few stitches here and there to customise his denim. mostly a few fun stitches. he did try to learn visible mending like sashiko but after joining nrc he didn't really have the time to pursue it further. his tension would also probably be cheeks if he took up embroidery. sorry deucey.
Riddle took up lace tatting a little after his overblot as a way to manage his anger issues. it's a dying art, but riddle finds the elegance of lace tatting charming. he's also this close to throwing hands with the old grannies who are gatekeeping patterns with one foot in the coffin and will continue to do so until they draw their last breath. wait a minute, prefect, isn't this just counterintuitive?
Jack makes macrame. thats it. thats the post. everybody pack up and go home. kidding. i haven't really tried out macrame, but he does give off the vibe. most common projects are cue drumroll hangers for his cacti! wow captain obvious. okay but for realsies, macrame feels therapeutic for him and its nice and meditative and relaxing. (look i don't know about macramers i crochet, okay, and it's anything but therapeutic but good for you guys if macrame is). he's also made keychains and tassels for his little sisters upon request (read: they pestered him till he gave in), but it's not his favourite thing in the world to make.
Ruggie is also a sewist kind of guy but it's more practical than a hobby. knowing how to mend clothes is kind of a necessity when you can't blow money away on new ones after you find a hole or two in them. headcanon that the community back home in afterglow savanah has a culture of visible mending too. embroidery is a luxury but people, as people do, added a few designs here and there just for fun and that trickled down into becoming a cultural practice. on another note, not fabric art per se but he's very good at basket weaving. apart from being good for food, dandelions are also good for twine and thread and thus also good for weaving. it's a resourceful little thing to know and actually make a decent coin if you know where to source your stuff.
Jamil can sew! it was pretty obvious, and i'm sure a lot of people saw it coming, but he's spent some time mending his and najma's clothes. i don't think he's mended kalim's clothes because the al-asim's are the kind of disgustingly rich where they can find one tiny hole in the garment and whoosh replaced with hand-embroidered garments that probably took hours in the triple digits and cost a few artist's their sanity. but also, embroidery culture in the scalding sands is super rich, so when it comes to traditional clothes, especially during the festive season, families do go on and splurge a little. kantha or chikan embroidery is favoured by jamil while kalim might wear opulent zardozi, which is embroidery with threads of gold. (not too sure about these, but this is my post so i can write whatever i want.)
Vil is sort of a complicated case. he isn't an avid sewist and can mend clothes. but while he doesn't actively sew or practice any related arts, his knowledge in theory far exceeds that of the average person. he's not big on online shopping, and most of his clothes are couture from his runway walks, but when he is shopping in person, he's the type to scrutinise the clothes down to the tension and stitch size. its pretty obvious he would not be caught dead in clearance sections or god forbid clad in fast fashion (you know what, good for him) but he can appreciate quality garments so he will pay a piece for what its worth. that said, do not drag him thrifting, he will scrutinise whatever pile of stuff you pick out your clothes from. (i say this, but he also might be able to find the twst equivalent of vintage mugler from the bins sooo just stay on your toes i guess?)
epel can knit and sew. his granny taught him duh. but also its pretty common to know how to mend your clothes in harveston. he's also familiar with quilting actually! a few of the ones he uses in his dorm were made by him. headcanon that he genuinely gets culture shock when he finds out a lot of guys at NRC barely know how to thread a needle and tie it off properly, much less sew. technicalities of toxic masculinity aside, somehow it's one of the hobbies that slipped through when deciding what's masculine and what's not. epel's knit mufflers and gloves before, but isn't really much of a knitter. his grandmammy taught him to knit, sew and quilt so if anyone at nrc does make a comment on him knitting though he'd full well throw hands till they shove it up their sorry-
sebek was taught by epel's grandma to knit too/j lol but actually i think briar valley holds a rich culture of textile arts so every person one way or the other picks up an art one way or the other. this boy's tension was horrendous when he first started off, but after some practice, he's become surprisingly good. like really good. like concerningly good, what the hell. why not me??? just because of that i say he can't crochet to save his life. he tried it out and failed miserably. there's a lump of stitches that still has the hook in it in some corner of his room as evidence of his failure. sebek gets like weirdly calm while knitting, maybe it's meditation through repetitive action, maybe it's a battle of composure, him against the needle. who knows? who can say? there is also a collection of plushies tucked away in the corner of his room that bear a concerning resemblance to waka-sama's imposing and majestic draconic form- what? no he did NOT turn waka-sama into a marketable plushie!!! who dares to make such fiendish accusations!!!
Malleus is a weaver through and through. i don't think there's any debate for this. He can spend hours at the loom simply weaving away in his lofty tower, unconcerned and unperturbed by mortal affairs. his loom is obviously not mechanised, and he's also a little pretentious, turning his nose up at an electric loom and muttering something about it not being the proper way or whateverrrrr. he also spins his own thread, and now i'm wondering if there's magical fibre that can be spun into magical fabric.

Reader was a mom, but didn't had enough time with her child (died young), because of that she miss them a lot and sometimes is possible to see her holding a cup of tea staring at the window with a blank expression.
She's touch starved because it affected her very much, sometimes she takes care of the boys like a mom without really knowing that. I like this type of thing mainly when is with the ones who don't hav a good relationship with their Mom, don't have one, or just doesn't have her present. (That one is more of a missing feeling than nothing)
I also have one that she goes with some realistic dreams in a loop inside her mind and sometimes end confused or letting some nonsense out because of that while draining her energy slowly.

The left cabinet is empty and the baby is crying; The loop plays softly while the shadows creep, I hold the living so the dead can sleep, But the phantom warmth is a promise I can’t keep.
THE SEVERED TETHER
The first thing you noticed about death was not the silence.
It was the weight.
A living child in your arms had weight—the dense, warm, improbable heaviness of a body that had only recently learned it was separate from yours. You had carried your son for nine months beneath your heart, and when he died, the worst part was not the stillness of his chest or the blue tinge that crept across his lips like frost on a window. A coffin. Purple-black wood, ornate handles, a lid that swung open to reveal a room full of mirrors and a creature made of fire who was screaming at a tanuki in a waistcoat. The noise was extraordinary—the fire-cat's shrieking, the tanuki's wailing, the distant thunder of an argument echoing through the halls. But beneath the noise, beneath the disorientation, beneath the sheer, mind-reeling impossibility of what had just occurred, you noticed something else.
The tether was gone.
You reached for it the way a swimmer reaches for the surface—not thinking, not planning, just reaching, with every fiber of your being, every atom of your soul. The invisible thread that had connected you to your son's spirit for three years, the lifeline that had kept you tethered to the world of the living when grief threatened to pull you under—it was not there.
Your hand clutched at the air. Your chest opened like a wound.
You could not feel him. You could not hear him. You could not see him anywhere in the shimmering, overlapping layers of the spirit realm that pressed against your sight like faces at a window. The dimension you had crossed was not the same one his ghost inhabited. The thread had snapped—or stretched beyond its limit—or been severed by the sheer, incomprehensible distance between worlds. You did not know which. You only knew that your son was dead, and now, for the first time since his funeral, he was truly, completely gone.
You sat in that coffin in that impossible room, and you made a sound that was not a word. It was the sound a body makes when something essential has been removed from it—not an organ, not a limb, but something deeper, something structural, something without which the architecture of the self begins to buckle. It was the sound of a house with the load-bearing wall removed, creaking, groaning, beginning its slow and inevitable collapse.
The tanuki asked you a question. You did not hear him. The fire-cat yelled something. You did not hear him either. You were too busy searching—frantically, desperately, raking your gaze across the spirit realm with the ferocity of a woman who has lost something precious in a dark room and will not rest until her fingers close around it.
Nothing.
The spirit realm here was different. It was populated—you could see that immediately, could see the faint, smudged outlines of presences that drifted through the walls and floors of the building, could feel the residual emotional imprint of decades of magical adolescents leaving their psychic fingerprints on every surface. But your son was not among them. His ghost had not followed you. The tether was severed, and you were alone in a world where the dead walked but none of them were yours.
Someone touched your shoulder. You flinched so hard your teeth clicked.
It was a boy—silver-haired, aurora-eyed, with an expression of wary concern that seemed much older than his face. He was saying something. Words. You made yourself listen.
"—okay? Can you hear me? You need to get out of the coffin, the Headmage is—"
You looked at him. You looked through him, into the space behind his eyes where the energy of a living soul hummed and flickered, and what you saw there was so startling that the grief in your chest was momentarily eclipsed by confusion. His aura was fractured—split along a seam that ran from the crown of his skull down through his sternum, as if his soul had been stitched together from two different pieces of cloth. It was not a broken aura; it was a repaired one, held together by something that looked, in the language of the sight, like love. Exhausted, desperate, stubborn love.
You recognized that kind of love. You wore it like a second skin.
"I'm fine," you said, and your voice was a dry rustle, the sound of a page turning in a book that had been left out in the rain. "I'm fine. I just—I need a moment."
You stepped out of the coffin, and your legs held, and you did not cry, because you had learned long ago that there was a difference between the grief you let the world see and the grief you carried in the private, locked, soundproofed rooms of your chest. The world did not need to see you break. The world needed you to stand up, walk forward, and figure out where you were, how to survive, and—God willing—how to find a way back to the ghost of your child.
But first, you had to breathe.
You breathed.
It hurt. Everything hurt. But you breathed anyway, because that was what mothers did—they breathed through the pain, and they kept going, and they made sure the people around them were fed, and warm, and safe, even when they themselves were starving, and cold, and falling apart.
The silver-haired boy—Silver, you would later learn—watched you with those ancient, fractured eyes, and you could see the question forming in his aura before it reached his lips: Who are you, and why does it feel like you're carrying the weight of the grave?
You did not answer the question. You smoothed your clothes. You tucked the grief back into the locked room. You turned to face the impossible, magical, terrifying world you had been thrown into, and you made a silent vow to the empty space where the tether used to be:
I will find my way back to you. I will find the ley lines of this world, and I will build a new thread, and I will pull you across the distance, and you will sit beside me again. I promise. I promise. I promise.

The words hung in the air, grotesque and tender and utterly, incomprehensibly wrong. You stood there, your arm outstretched, your voice fading into the silence of the dorm, and the echo of your own words came back to you, and you heard what you were saying—baby, you said baby, you were talking to a child who was not here, would never be here, could not be here because he was dead and his spirit was on the other side of an impossible distance and the tether was severed and the juice was not in the cabinet and the toast was not in the toaster and the hand on your pant leg was a memory, only a memory, nothing but a memory, and you were losing your mind.
You pulled your arm back. You stared at your hand—the same hand that had reached, without thinking, for a juice box to give to a ghost. Your fingers were trembling. Your whole body was trembling. The hollow in your chest was aching, not with the familiar, chronic throb of the severed tether, but with a sharper, more urgent pain—the pain of a wound that has been ripped open before it could heal.
You turned off the burner. You sat down on the floor. You pressed your back against the cabinet and your palms against your eyes, and you breathed, and the breathing was the hardest thing you had ever done, harder than the Overblot, harder than the Shadows, harder than the mirror, because the mirror had taken you away from your son but the dream had brought him back, and the bringing-back was worse than the taking-away, because the taking-away you could survive but the bringing-back you could not, because it was a lie, and the lie was so beautiful and so thorough and so real that your own body had believed it, your own hands had reached for it, your own voice had answered it, and the truth—that he was gone, that the kitchen was a dream, that the juice was not in the cabinet—was an act of violence you were forced to commit against yourself every single time you woke up.

Some nights, you were in the bathroom, kneeling beside the tub, testing the temperature of the water with your elbow while he splashed and shrieked and tried to eat the bubbles. This one. This is the real one. The one without him. The one where the juice is not in the cabinet and the toast is not in the toaster and the hand on your pant leg is a ghost of a ghost, the memory of a memory, the echo of an echo, and you are alone, you are alone, you are alone.
The loop drained you.
Not all at once—it was a slow, steady, insidious bleed, the way a crack in a dam drains the reservoir behind it. Each dream took a piece of you: a fragment of energy, a thread of warmth, a sliver of the vital, animating force that kept you standing and baking and holding and seeing. You would walk into a room and forget why you were there. You would open your mouth to speak and the wrong words would come out—kitchen words, mother words, words that belonged to a life that was not this one.
"Did you eat your vegetables?" you asked Ace one afternoon, as he was reaching for a cookie, and the question was so unexpected, so jarringly parental, that he froze with his hand in the jar and stared at you with an expression caught between amusement and alarm.
"I'm not five," he said.
"I know," you said, and your voice was distant, foggy, as if you were speaking from the far end of a long corridor. "I just—I thought—" You shook your head. The fog cleared, but slowly, reluctantly, like mist clinging to a mirror. "Sorry. I don't know where that came from."
But you did know. You knew exactly where it came from. It came from the dream, from the loop, from the version of you that was still making breakfast and testing bathwater and reading one more story in a kitchen that did not exist to a child who was not there. That version of you was bleeding through, seeping across the boundary between sleep and waking, leaving you disoriented and confused and saying things that made no sense because they made sense in a world you could not live in.

"It's like she's somewhere else," he said to Ace that night, his voice low and worried. "Like she's talking to someone who isn't there."
"She's probably just tired," Ace said, but his voice lacked its usual conviction, and his hand, reaching for another cookie, hesitated before it closed around the edge.
The worst of it was not the disorientation.
The worst of it was the moment in between.
There was a space—a fraction of a second, a sliver of time so thin you could not name it—where the dream ended and the waking had not yet begun. You learned to keep your eyes open by force of will, drinking cup after cup of tea until the caffeine made your hands shake and your heart race and your vision blur, but the shaking and the racing and the blurring were better than the alternative—better than the kitchen and the juice and the voice saying Mama and the space where he was alive and the collapse where he was dead and the words that fell from your mouth like stones into a well, making no sound, reaching no one.
But the body was not built for wakefulness. The body was built for sleep, and the body would have sleep, and the body did not care that sleep was a door that led to a room where a dead child waited to be fed. The body needed rest, and the rest came with a price, and the price was the loop, and the loop was the dream, and the dream was the kitchen with the yellow walls and the cracked tile and the toaster that always burned the left side, and the voice, his voice, saying:
"Mama? I want juuuuuce."
And you, because you were his mother, because you had always been his mother, because you would always be his mother, even in a dream that was not real and a kitchen that did not exist and a world that was not yours—reached for the cabinet, and said:
"The orange juice is in the left cabinet, baby."
And the loop began again.
And again.
And again.
The night before you went to Sam's shop, the dream changed.
You were in the kitchen—your kitchen, the real one, the one that existed only in the loop—and your son was sitting at the table, his legs swinging, his mouth full of scrambled eggs, his eyes bright with a question he had not yet asked. "I'm just tired," you said.
"Then you should sleep," he said, with the devastating, unanswerable logic of a child who has not yet learned that sleep is not always a refuge. "I'll be here when you wake up. I promise."
The word promise broke the surface of the dream like a stone dropped into still water. The ripples spread outward, distorting the kitchen, the table, the eggs, the toast, his face. The golden light flickered. The walls wavered. His hand, reaching across the table for yours, began to dissolve at the edges, the small fingers blurring and fragmenting and losing their shape.
"Mama?" His voice was distant now, muffled, as if he were speaking from the far end of a long tunnel. "Mama, where are you going?"
"I'm not going anywhere, baby."
"Don't leave me. Don't leave me."
"I won't. I promise. I won't—"
You woke up.
The room was dark. The sheets were tangled around your legs. Your arm was extended, reaching across the mattress for a small body that was not there, had never been there, would never be there again. Your face was wet—not with the phantom tears of the dream, but with real tears, hot and salt and streaming down your cheeks and into your ears and pooling on the pillow beneath your head.
"Don't leave me," you whispered to the empty room. "Don't leave me, baby. I'm here. I'm right here."
The words fell into the silence and were swallowed whole. No echo. No answer. Just the dark, and the cold, and the hollow in your chest that was wider and deeper and more vast than it had ever been, because the dream had given you a gift—the gift of his presence, his warmth, his voice—and the waking had taken it away, as it always did, and the taking was worse each time, not because the grief was growing but because the hope was growing, and hope was the cruelest weapon the universe had ever forged, because it made the loss new every single time.

They would eat, and they would feel safe, and you would hold the space between the living and the dead, and the loop would wait—it always waited, patient and relentless and immovable—but you would face it when it came, and you would survive it, as you always survived it, not because the surviving was easy, but because the alternative was the door of shadow, and you had seen what lay on the other side of that door, and you had chosen—chosen—to stay.
Even if staying meant waking up every morning with the taste of phantom orange juice on your tongue and the echo of a dead child's voice in your ears and the wrong words falling from your mouth like leaves from a dying tree.
Even if staying meant the loop.
Even if staying meant the collapse.
Even if staying meant reaching for a juice box that was not there and saying, The orange juice is in the left cabinet, baby, to an empty room, and hearing nothing, and feeling nothing, and being nothing but a woman standing in a kitchen that was not hers, reaching for a child who was not there, in a world that had taken everything from her and was, inexplicably, still asking her to give.
You gave.
Because that was what mothers did.
They gave, and gave, and gave.
And the loop rolled on.
Until the day the loop was interrupted by a scream.
THE ANATOMY OF AN OVERBLOT

You stood at the edge of the Heartslabyul garden, the acrid taste of burning magic thick on your tongue, and you watched the thing that had been Riddle Rosehearts rise from the ink, and you understood why the living called it a monster. It was enormous—a towering, twisted sculpture of black ichor and crimson thorns, its limbs too long, its proportions wrong in the way of a nightmare that has learned to walk. The ink dripped from its frame like tar, hissing where it struck the manicured lawn, and the air around it hummed with a frequency so low it vibrated in your back teeth.
The students were scattering. Some were screaming. Some were frozen, their faces slack with the blank, uncomprehending terror of people who had never seen the dark side of magic made flesh. Crowley was shouting orders that no one was following. Trey and Cater were trying to hold the line, their faces pale and set, their magic flickering like matches in a hurricane.
And Riddle—or the thing wearing Riddle's shape—was screaming.
It was not a human sound. It was the sound of glass grinding against glass, of metal tearing, of a pressure valve releasing centuries of compressed fury in a single, sustained, deafening roar. The sound hit you in the chest like a physical blow, and you staggered, and the world tilted, and for a moment—just a moment—you saw it.
The dome.
It rose from the creature's shoulders like a crown of obsidian glass, enormous and spherical, its surface swirling with the dark, viscous ink of the Overblot. And inside the dome, visible only to eyes that had been trained to see past the membrane of the visible world, were two figures.
The first was a boy.
He was small—so impossibly, heartbreakingly small, curled in the center of the dome with his knees drawn to his chest and his arms wrapped around his shins, his red hair plastered to his forehead with sweat or tears, his body shaking with the force of sobs so violent that his entire form trembled. He was whimpering. Not screaming, not raging—whimpering, the sound a child makes when he has been punished and does not understand why, the sound of a boy who has been told his whole life that his feelings are too big, too loud, too wrong, and who has finally, desperately, tried to push them down only to discover that the feelings have teeth.
He was Riddle. The real Riddle. The seventeen-year-old boy who had never been allowed to be a child, who had been shaped and molded and corrected until there was no room left for the messy, unmanageable, beautiful chaos of being human. He was crying, and his tears were dissolving into the ink, and he was alone, trapped inside a prison of his own making, unable to hear the world outside and unable to make the world hear him.
And behind him—around him—through him—was the second figure.
It was vast. It filled the dome the way smoke fills a jar, pressing against the glass from the inside, its form shifting and unstable, a towering shadow of pure, undiluted agony. It was not a person; it was a force—the accumulated weight of every suppressed tear, every swallowed protest, every moment Riddle had smiled when he wanted to scream and obeyed when he wanted to run. A glass tomb where the fractured pieces of a broken soul were sealed together by the pressure of their own pain, held in an eternal, agonizing stalemate that consumed everything around it and could not, by its own power, be resolved.
The darkness fed on the light. The light contained the darkness. And the creature they created together rampaged through the world, destroying everything in its path, while the two halves of Riddle Rosehearts remained trapped inside, one whimpering and one screaming, neither able to reach the other and neither able to let go.
You fell to your knees.
The force of the revelation hit you like a physical blow—not in your mind, but in your body, in the deep, maternal, gut-level place where you kept the knowledge of what it meant to hold a suffering child and be unable to ease his pain. You could feel the whimpering boy's distress in your marrow. You could feel the screaming shadow's anguish in your blood. And you understood, with a clarity that cut like a scalpel, that the students of Night Raven College were fighting the wrong enemy.
They were trying to defeat the monster. They were launching spells at its body, hacking at its thorns, trying to break it apart with force and fury and the blunt instrument of magical violence. And every spell that struck the creature sent a shockwave through the dome—through both the figures inside it—and the whimpering boy flinched, and the screaming shadow howled louder, and the balance held, and the creature kept standing, because the balance had to hold, because the alternative to balance was annihilation, and the soul—even a fractured, suffering soul—would choose agony over oblivion every time.
"Stop!" you screamed.
No one heard you. The noise of the battle was deafening—the crack of magic, the crash of thorns, the shouts of students who were in over their heads and knew it. Another spell hit the creature's torso, and the dome shuddered, and the whimpering boy inside let out a wail that made your heart seize in your chest.
"Stop!" You lunged forward, your hand closing around Ace's arm before he could launch another attack. He stared at you, his eyes wild, his aura a chaos of fear and adrenaline.
"What are you doing? We have to—"
"You can't hit him!" You were shaking—shaking so hard your teeth chattered, shaking with the force of the vision and the terror of what would happen if they didn't stop. "He's in there, Ace! Riddle is in there! Can't you see him? He's trapped inside the dome, and if you shatter the glass, you'll shatter him!"
Ace stared at you like you had lost your mind. "There's no dome! There's just the monster—"
"There IS a dome!" You released his arm and pointed at the creature with a finger that trembled like a leaf in a storm. "Inside the head! Inside the glass! He's sitting in the middle and he's crying, and the other part of him is screaming, and they're holding each other hostage, and if you break the shell you will kill them both!"
The words tumbled out of you in a torrent, and Ace recoiled, and Deuce appeared at his shoulder, and Cater and Trey turned from the front lines to stare at you with expressions of exhausted bewilderment, and for a single, suspended moment, the battle paused.
"Then what do we do?" Trey asked, and his voice was the voice of a man who was ready to grasp at any straw, no matter how improbable, because the alternative was watching his childhood friend disappear into a monster and never come back.
You looked at the creature. You looked at the dome. You looked at the whimpering boy and the screaming shadow, and you made a choice that was not a choice at all, because there was only one thing you could do, only one thing you had ever done, only one thing your body knew how to do when confronted with a pain it could not ignore.
You walked toward it.
"Yuu!" Deuce's voice, sharp with alarm. "What are you—"
"Cover me," you said, and you did not look back.
The thorns came first. They rose from the ground like the fingers of a buried giant, black and jagged, their tips glistening with the dark, venomous sap of the Overblot. Not the creature—you. The medium. The woman with flour on her hands and a hollow in her chest and a miracle in her blood. The mother who had lost her child and learned, in the hardest way possible, that the only thing more powerful than grief was the stubborn, irrational, world-defying refusal to let pain have the last word.
His lips moved. A single word, soundless behind the glass: Help.
You pressed your hands against the dome.
It was cold. Not the cold of ice or winter, but the cold of a spirit that has been cut off from the warmth of the living for so long that it has forgotten what heat feels like. The cold seeped into your palms, your fingers, your wrists, traveling up your arms and into your chest, and for a moment—just a moment—you felt the full, staggering weight of Riddle's pain, and it nearly broke you.
Seventeen years of silence. Seventeen years of compliance. Seventeen years of being told that his feelings were problems to be solved, that his tears were failures, that his joy was a distraction, that his anger was a sin. Seventeen years of a mother's love that was not love but architecture—a blueprint for a perfect son, drawn in red ink and enforced with an iron hand. Seventeen years of a boy trying to fit himself into a shape that was never meant to hold him, and the shape breaking, and the boy breaking, and the pieces being stuffed back in and glued together and told to hold, hold, hold—
The screaming shadow surged toward you. Its face—if it had a face—was inches from the glass, and its mouth was open in a silent, endless howl, and the sound of it bypassed your ears and went straight to the marrow of your bones. It was rage and grief and the raw, bleeding need to be heard, and it pressed against the glass with the force of a flood against a dam, and the glass held, and the shadow howled, and the boy behind it whimpered, and you—
You spoke to it.
Not in the language of spells or incantations. Not in the clinical, analytical vocabulary of magic that Professor Crewel taught in his classroom. "You can come out now," you said, and your voice cracked on the word out, splitting it open to reveal the raw, desperate hope beneath. "You don't have to hold it in anymore. You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to be quiet. You just have to breathe, sweetheart. Can you do that for me? Can you breathe?"
The boy's chin trembled. His hands, clenched around his shins, loosened. The screaming shadow turned—not toward you, but toward the boy, and for the first time, the two figures in the dome looked at each other. The suppressed and the suppressor. The pain and the silence. The two halves of a soul that had been at war for seventeen years, standing face to face in the glass tomb of an Overblot, and the moment stretched, and the silence deepened, and—
The shadow reached out its hand.
The boy took it.
The dome shattered.
The ink did not explode outward; it collapsed, folding in on itself like a breath released, the vast, towering form of the Overblot creature deflating, dissolving, pouring back into the small, trembling body of a seventeen-year-old boy who stood in the center of the garden with his head bowed and his shoulders shaking and his hands—his living hands—clenched at his sides.
Riddle Rosehearts stood in the ruins of his own grief, and he was not a monster. He was a boy who had been broken and had put himself back together, and the cracks were still there, and they would always be there, but the cracks were what let the light in, and the light was what let him breathe.
You caught him before he hit the ground.
His body was light—too light, the weight of a person who had been running on fury and desperation and the dregs of his own life force. His head lolled against your shoulder, his red hair matted with sweat and ink, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps that sounded like the sobs he had never been allowed to cry.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, and the words were barely audible, barely more than a breath. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I tried to hold it in. I tried—"
"Shh," you said, and you lowered him gently to the ground, cradling his head in your lap, your hand stroking his hair with the automatic, bone-deep instinct of a mother soothing a frightened child. "You don't have to be sorry. You don't have to hold anything in. Not anymore. Not with me."
His face crumpled. The last wall—the last, thinnest, most stubbornly defended wall of the perfect, obedient, unshakeable Riddle Rosehearts—came down, and he pressed his face into your stomach, and he wept. "Every time you what?" you asked, your voice hoarse and thick.
Ortho looked down at his translucent hands. "Every time I used to cry," he said quietly. "Before."

But the grief was not the only thing that sat beside you anymore.
The ghost cat was there. Every night, she curled around Grim, her phantom tongue licking the fur he could not feel, her golden eyes fixed on the living son she could not reach. And you sat beside her, and you stroked the air above her head, and you whispered the same words you whispered to Riddle, to Ace, to every hungry, touch-starved boy who walked through your door: I see you. You're doing a good job. I'm right here.
And sometimes, in the small hours of the morning, when the dorm was quiet and the ghosts were still and the only sound was the ticking of the clock and the purring of a cat who had been dead for longer than you had been alive, you thought you could hear something else—a faint, distant, impossibly faraway sound, like the echo of a voice calling your name across a canyon a thousand miles wide.
It's the wind, you told yourself. It's the pipes. It's the house settling.

You could do it. You could walk into Sam's shop, through the door of shadow, into the space between worlds where the dead drifted and the lost ones waited. You could search for your boy's spirit, call his name across the void, find the end of the severed tether and pull it back to you. You could hold him again—hold his ghost, his memory, the flickering, insubstantial echo of the child you had loved and lost and loved again beyond the boundary of death.
You could.
But you thought about Riddle, who had wept in your arms and fallen asleep for the first time in his life without nightmares. You thought about Ace, who had laughed when you called him a good boy and then looked away with eyes that were dangerously bright. You thought about Ortho, the ghost boy with the blue-flame hair, who was waiting on the steps for you to come back and talk to him. If you stepped through the Shadow's door, you would not come back. You knew this the way you knew your own heartbeat—instinctively, absolutely, without the need for evidence or argument. The path to the lost ones was a one-way road, and the price of walking it was the world you left behind.
And the world you left behind contained a dorm full of boys who had learned to find comfort in the smell of burnt sugar and the warmth of a kitchen and the steady, stubborn, unshakeable presence of a woman who could see the dead and chose, instead, to feed the living.
You set the cup down.
The tea was cold. You poured it out, and you made a fresh pot, and the sound of the water boiling and the steam hissing and the kettle whistling filled the kitchen with the familiar, domestic, beautifully ordinary music of a morning that had not yet decided what it was going to be.

You carried the weight of the unseen. You carried the grief of the mother cat and the confusion of the ghost boy and the loneliness of the dragon prince and the suppressed screams of a hundred Overblot scars. You carried your own grief—the severed tether, the empty chair, the voice you could not hear—and you carried it not as a burden, but as a foundation. The thing that had been taken from you had left a hole, and the hole had filled with power, and the power had become a gift, and the gift had become a choice, and the choice was this:
