>:/ the frustrating thing about the double ep.40 isn't that Wen Ji and Lu Ji were killed off, the frustrating thing is that they were killed off due to bad writing.
ep.40 was just...weird. very, very weirdly written. the show's writing is a little rough in places, but overall it comes together in a very enjoyable way. but ep.40 is a complete mess. they absolutely blitz through the end of the coup in an anti-climatic way, then blitz through the aftermath even faster with several summaries and "oh, and this happened too."
then they realized they still had 40 minutes of episode left and instead of expanding or reworking any of that, they instead have Xiao Heng go off to war. which is totally fine, I like that narrative choice actually, but they had to simultaneously drag it out and blitz through it in 30 minutes because it's the last episode but they ended their actual story too quickly. so the show ends on 30 minutes of switching between him just fighting random battles and Xue Fengfei just...sitting. and waiting. and doing some more of that. and doing some more of that again. which is a complete reversal of what these two have been doing in the other 39 episodes and misses everything that drew us into this story in the first place, namely how clever they are and how much fun they have scheming together. and to keep the narrative from loosing steam or audience attention entirely, they still have to answer a question with those 30 minutes. and since Xiao Heng has to return home from war--the narrative can't allow anything else--they instead ask, "will he return home by when he promised?" and that's why Lu Ji and Wen Ji had to die, because there's no other way to establish those stakes in simultaneously the shortest and longest war narrative ever.
it's just. frustrating. >:/ the writers had ignored SO MUCH of the coup. they gave Xue Fengfei such a satisfying ending with Shen Yurong but with Xiao Heng's mountain of issues, he swung a sword and it just...ended. and we at least had that ending for her, but it's not like the episode was short on time, they could've reworked his final confrontation with Prince Cheng into something with comparable if not equal narrative weight. not to mention how much of the coup aftermath was ignored too! there's a ton of cleanup to be done and Xiao Heng is the only one the emperor can trust to go North-- there's so much promise in that premise for a finale wrap-up! they'd mentioned repeatedly before how Xue Fengfei could've been a force to be reckoned with in the official courts if she were a man during the emperor's court arc-- even if the narrative didn't want to tackle her defying law and tradition by becoming an official, they still could've shown her taking over Xiao Heng's information network or. idk, playing Go with the emperor as cover for him discussing issues with her or something. or a million others things they skipped right over.
I'm just. ugh, so annoyed that a show I really enjoyed spent the final 30min of it showing its very fun characters in the most boring way possible >:(
