When Will byers returns home after spending a long week in hell, he's told his best friend is dead.

Mike jumped off the edge of the quarry. He knows that much, a year later, because dustin let it slip to him one day - when interviews of Troy walsh confirming they saw him die start circulating in the papers. (The same articles people choose to cut out and write zombie boy on) (...he can't even throw them away)

Sometimes he feels like this is all one big nightmare, one that started on November 6th 1983- one that's never going to end.

There's something cold and numb in his heart. He's finally mad at mike, some days. He wants to forget on others. Those days make him feel sick.

How could he have jumped?

His vision keeps flashing between here and the Upside Down. The doctors call it PTSD. They call it the anniversary effect. He throws up something vile in the sink and stumbles backwards into the cold bathroom wall, panic locking every limb in place as his knees give out.

No, no, no, no, no-

He comes back to himself a while later, with the vague feeling of warm hands on his and a comforting voice just out of reach. He's cold.

He throws up again.

Later, when the doctors ask him to identify his mother, he does. To her right, though, he tells them that that's mike, and he's oblivious to the way his mother's face falls, the way the scientists all exchange looks. Later, It is only the warmth of someone's hand in his that allows him to signal hopper with his morse code.

They all flinch anytime He addresses Mike. He knows who that is. Why don't they see?

They can't. That's all there is to it, a couple months later on the night of the snowball- because will is no longer fucking possessed. Will is not possessed and yet- standing in the middle of his room is Mike. Will blinks and mike...Mike flickers.

Oh.
