@tatmaslany TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT WHEN WE FORGET ABOUT THE DEADLINES, IT’S TIME
welcome again to the year of the best theme song! as you know: i love you and you get me and i’m eternally grateful for your taste <3 below are a couple small, random scenes from a henry-dms-for-his-moms universe -- nothing extravagant, but i hope you enjoy!
Henry answers the door almost before Emma’s finished knocking and offers her a smile so wide and boyish he could nearly be ten again. “Mom’s here!” he announces, and Regina emerges from the kitchen, towel still in hand, smile easy.
“If you could watch the stove for a moment, I’ve just been informed it’s time to increase one of my ability scores,” she says, already halfway to the stairs.
“You get to up an ability score?” Emma calls after her, gently stirring the pasta she finds on the stovetop. “Damn wizards,” she adds, this time mostly to herself.
“Mom’s spent the whole week trying to get me to tell her what’s in the cave,” Henry whispers to Emma. “She practically bought out the entire comics shop.”
Regina emerges from the hallway so quickly Emma’s sure there must have been poofing involved. “That, young man, is quite an exaggeration,” she says, sliding into the space beside Emma to check the state of the vegetables. “And anyway, it was a very small shop.”
Two hundred dollars, Henry mouths to Emma, and Emma raises an eyebrow. “You’ve been trying to bribe our son into giving you an advantage?”
“Giving us an advantage,” Regina amends. “We’re on the same side.” A beat. “And doing something nice for Henry doesn’t automatically imply bribery.”
“It does when you finish the trip with ‘if it’s a monster waiting in the cave for us, does it have more or less than four legs?’” Henry points out.
“It was a simple question,” Regina insists, though she hasn’t once looked up from the stove. The look of utter skepticism Henry offers says enough for everyone involved.
It turns out it isn’t a monster so much as a city that tries to murder them. Regina’s giant eagle form is barely enough to bring them both back to safety, but they’re delirious with relief when they finally touch down.
“You almost killed us, kid,” Emma says, but she’s grinning. “You might wanna rethink murdering your moms—at least while you’re still a minor.”
“You could always just make a new character, you know,” Henry says.
The sound Regina makes is maybe more offended than either Emma or Henry have ever heard.
*
“Regina, if you don’t back up at least two spaces, it’ll be in melee with you by the next round! Emma, the one behind you has a way lower armor thing. With the way you’ve been rolling, you should probably focus there. And David, don’t you have a sixth-level spell left?”
Henry’s looking warily between Snow and Regina before Snow’s even halfway finished barking orders, but Emma’s Uh, Mom, you think maybe you could tone it down some— is interrupted when Regina turns to Henry.
“What’s the range for Cone of Cold?” Regina asks.
“It makes a sixty foot cone,” Henry says, cautiously.
Snow’s brows furrow. “No, Regina, the problem is how close you are, not—”
“So if I moved twenty feet left,” Regina says, “and then turned a little, it would affect the giant and Snow White?”
“You mean Nightingale,” Henry says.
“Yes. The giant and…Nightingale.”
It’s the first and last time Snow and David show up for family D&D night.
*
Emma’s phone vibrates from beside her placemat; when she glances at it, she finds: Henry tells me you just got quivering palm. We should go after that idiot vampire immediately.
Despite the fact that Regina’s house comes with at least six times the square footage –and though even Emma’s boasts considerably more breathing room—everyone’s crowded into Snow and David’s apartment for Christmas dinner. Emma suspects it has something to do with her mother’s determination to prove herself, which is hard to fault her for.
It’s also hard to fault Regina for just the smallest hint of mischief at the corner of her smile when she shows up at the door with freshly-baked apple crumble to offer. (Still, Snow’s thanks have been altogether sincere.)
Emma glances up to catch Regina’s eye—they’re seated across from each other, awaiting the final dish, and Regina’s smile is conspiratorial.
Hell yeah, she types back. Are you good on spells or should we long rest first?
I have enough. I think it’s best if we catch him unawares. We have the element of surprise, and from all that blood in the sorcerer’s mansion, he won’t be at the top of his game.
You think it could’ve been a ruse, though?
Unlikely, but not impossible. Perhaps we should make a quick stop by our friend’s shop to see if he can impart any wisdom as to the symbols in the note.
When her phone vibrates next, it’s a group text that also includes Henry. You said Comprehend Languages didn’t work on the note’s symbols, right?
Henry looks between the two of them, shakes his head, and then writes, No. It’s magical.
So am I.
It’d be pretty hard to use the spell if you weren’t, Mom, Henry answers, and Emma snorts into her water. And then, again from Henry: Also, grandma looks like she’s ready to murder both of you.
They look up in synchrony, although Emma has a feeling she has sheepish written all over her face in sharp contrast to Regina’s relative nonchalance. “…oh, have we finally got everyone’s attention?” Snow asks, pointedly, and Emma offers what she hopes is a conciliatory half-smile. “Now, Christmas is a time to enjoy family and interact with the people in your lives. And I am very thankful to have all of you here with us. It means the world to me that you’re all a part of our family, and I wanted to do what I could to show how much I appreciate you and everything each of you has done for us. We hope you enjoy!”
This time, when Emma taps out a text, she at least has the decency to do it under the table. Damn when are you gonna learn how to cook turkey this good?
Regina’s text is just a fire emoji, which Emma would’ve known to take as a threat even if it hadn’t followed a kick under the table.
Apple crumble tonight, vampire hunting in three days’ time. There have been worse times to be a savior.
Happy Birthday Sanjit!
It's your birthday and I've been so excited for months, I can't even tell you. I've been wanting to make it a special day so I hope you'll let me spoil you the way you've been spoiling me since we started dating and even before then.
First a small gesture, the key to my house. I know we're only six months in to dating seriously but you've become such a pivotal part of my life and I want you to know I'm opening up every part of myself to you.
Secondly...a watch. You don't need it, I know you have some fantastic pieces, but that day we were shopping, probably in March sometime--you saw this and I could see the look in your eyes. Luckily it was only one piece so I bought it for today and hope you know that any time I spend with you, is time worth cherishing.
Lastly, I know how hard you work and I know how much you love travelling so one trip anywhere you want for ten days coming up in June...I've already cleared it with everyone and while it's a pretty busy time for me as well...I'd be honoured if you took me on your passenger ticket.
You coming into my life was truly like a breath of fresh air, you are someone I didn't know I was looking for and yet...here you are, showing up each and every day as someone I can count on, someone I can depend on. You are so talented, so thoughtful, so intelligent...sometimes I can't even think of the right words to use to describe you. Just know....I am absolutely falling in love with you more and more each day.
Today on your special day, I hope all your wishes come true and I hope every dream and goal you've made for yourself is accomplished.
Yours,
Laila 🩷
