"...I don't like when you talk like that," Hidetoshi whispers with a hand cupping Shinjiiro's cheek. They share a bed— share a life together, so it's only natural that it'd come up eventually. Inaba is better for him. If he's here and keeps working towards recoverinng, he'll get better. He has to get better. If he loses him, it'd be like losing his better half.
"You aren't going to die, Shinjiro. Not yet." Those eyes that're usually cold and stern always soften when faced with the man he'd vowed (quietly, so Shinjiro wouldn't push him away) to be with. "I love you."
a line shinjiro often finds himself crossing is the one between safely acknowledging his longer-than-expected life, and being overly fatalistic. it's just … he really wasn't supposed to live this long. even though his meds work well - work great, even, compared to when they were first being developed - some things just can't be undone. his body likes to remind him of that plenty. the feeling that any moment could be his last looms over him nearly constantly. he doesn't mind overtly recognizing that - not with hidetoshi, anyway, who has already seen him through the worst of it all.
and maybe, just maybe, he sometimes gets fed up with how fucked up he is. how fucked up he's made himself. maybe sometimes coughing up blood in the middle of the night is just too much, and so is sanitizing his hands every five minutes, and taking his cavalcade of pills morning and night …
he's feeling a bit sorry for himself tonight, apparently.
lacking a good response, knowing this won't be the last time he gets a little overly dramatic about his impending doom, shinjiro can only pull his partner close and press a kiss to his forehead.
