What they're doing with Essek really highlights something that I didn't notice in the campaign, especially with his emphasis on his age gap with Caleb (I'm talking about his habit of calling Caleb "young man"). They're really highlighting how incredibly young, and naive, Essek is. In the campaign, he acts like a man with so much wisdon and experience, which might be true in the face of characters like Caleb and even the Nein as a whole, but when faced with Trent Ikithon, multiple people who have lived dozens of lives, and his tendency to overestimate himself, it really shows just how young he truly is.

He's almost childlike in comparison to the people around him. He's making decisions based on the arrogant fact that he thinks he knows better than everyone else. Now he's stuck working with an evil wizard with no out and no way to stop what he's done. A war is on the horizon, he's losing people he cared about (his mother and now Verat), and he has no way to fix it.

We're going to see him become more desperate and more cornered until he breaks (preferably in front of the Nein, and in particular, Caleb) at some point in future seasons. I mean, we've already seen clear regret from him. It'll be interesting to see how he handles being alone in such a terrifying, and also self-inflicted circumstance.

He's going to have to come to terms with his own flaws. With the fact that he acted out of desperation, greed, and arrogance. None of which justifies stealing an artifact, putting thousands of lives in danger, and literally lighting the match that starts the greatest fire seen on this side of the world.

I'm so excited to see where it goes. I'm so excited to see him acting out, or shutting his emotions away. He's so good at putting inna face, but what happens when people like Caleb and Beau see beneath that flimsy exterior? His fragile sense of calm is going to crumble and crumble fast. I guess it's a good thing that he'll crumble into the arms of a group famous for holding broken people up to begin with.
