a series of questions answered by selene’s mirae to accompany her cover shoot for cosmopolitan korea’s february 2022 issue.

what is your must-have item for the winter? “this year, the big item i’m into is coats. i may have bought a few too many since i won’t be able to wear them once it starts heating up again, but in cold weather, they’re as critical a part of an outfit as any other.”

do you often find yourself buying more clothes than you need? “no, that’s why i noticed how many coats i’ve bought! i like to keep items in my closet i can use in many different ways and mix and match instead of spending money on things i’ll only wear once. growing up, i was taught not to be wasteful, so i still try to be to this day.”

in selene’s last title track “decalcomanie”, one of the key points of the chorus is when you sing “i feel good”. what makes you feel good these days? “working hard. that’s something i’ve always tried to do since i debuted, but recently i’ve really been feeling the pay-off of working hard more. whether it’s long days on set or practicing for a performance with my group, nothing can beat that feeling for me lately.”

you were recently announced to be filming a new drama, squid game. how has that been going? “squid game is different from any of the dramas i’ve worked on before, so it’s been a learning experience. the character i’m playing is different, too. i don’t know how much i can say about her yet, but i feel that in the ways we are similar, we’re very similar and, in the ways we’re different, we’re very much so. i can feel myself growing as an actress on set, so i’m confident about the project.”

it’s been over a decade since you debuted. is learning new things still important to you? “of course! a decade may seem like a long time, but it’s not a lot in the grand scheme of things. i’d like to be around for fifty or sixty years, so i’m only in the beginning of my career from that perspective. the moment i stop learning, my career will stop soon after it since i won’t have anything new to show fans and audiences.”

how long do you see yourself active with selene? “for as long as i can be! i mean that from the depths of my heart. for as long as i’m physically able, i see myself singing and dancing with selene — and even when we’re past that, to the age it might not be advisable anymore. no matter what paths i follow as hwang mirae, selene will always be carried with me, and not only in name.”

some of the looks in this photoshoot seem like a new style for you, but you pull them off well. are there any styles you are adamant about not trying?      “no, not really. i experiment in my fashion a lot in my personal life beyond the styles selene wears on the stage, so nothing is ever too odd for me. i like to try new styles and see how i can make them work for me. i see it as a challenge.”

you recently starred in the netflix anthology series persona, where you played four different characters. was it more challenging to play four different characters in short films than to play one character over a long story like in the world of the married?      “one thing i really love about acting is that i can find something in common with every character. it’s a reminder of how everyone is only human at the end of the day, and we all have that in common. on the other hand, i’ve never played a character that is exactly like me. that’d be impossible, for someone to write a character that’s just me. through that, i get to see and experience different parts of humanity. there were characters i played in persona that i would have liked to have spent more time with and seen more of their story, but the point of the project was that we get to see one blip in their lives. even in the case of someone like yeo dakyung, who i played over a sixteen-episode story, there were parts of her i wished i’d gotten to explore more. so i don’t think it was more challenging, but i did finish filming for each episode holding onto the character for a while after. that’s natural as an actor, though. you get attached to the roles you play.”

if there was an anthology series with characters that represented four different aspects of mirae, what would those characters be like?      “that’s funny, but we really do all have different versions of ourselves within ourselves when you think about it. i think it would be the characters of different roles i play in my life. the mirae that’s a performer, the mirae that’s a daughter, the mirae that’s a friend, the mirae that’s a sister. something like that.”

selene recently made a comeback with “decalcomanie”, which is a sexier sound like selene became known for, but recently you’ve been releasing songs like “kill bill” and “sixth sense”. is there a sound you feel is most ‘mirae’ that selene has done?      “every sound selene has done feels ‘mirae’ to me, because i’m a part of it. some concepts i’ve been able to adapt to more easily than others, but there was never one that i felt was completely outside of me.”

you come off as very confident in yourself and your abilities. is there ever a time you’re nervous or insecure?      “of course there is. everyone has those times. i’m happy to hear i come off as confident because that’s the result of hard work making me assured in and proud of my abilities, but no one is perfect or sure of themselves all of the time. every time i take on a new project, at the beginning i wonder ‘will i do this well? am i skilled enough for this?’ but i use that as a driving force to put my all into it until i can be confident. that’s the way you have to approach things.”

though you’re already confident, what is a compliment you like to hear?      “i like it when i’m told i look cool or when people recognize the hard work i put in. performers naturally want the product of their work to look effortless because that’s most entertaining, but when my peers can see past that and see the work i put into it, i feel the most appreciated.”

what is one thing you want to get better at in the new year?     “everything! i don’t want to stagnate in any area. but in particular, i’d like to become a better friend, daughter, and sister. i want to make sure i’m not neglecting the people around me. without them, i wouldn’t have anything at all.”

persona (2021): ep. 1 - love set

synopsis: two women become enmeshed in an intense battle of wills on the tennis court and try to pummel each other, but the stakes are higher than they realize.

love set was the episode of persona found the most outside of her comfort zone despite arguably having the least detailed premise. she’s been interested in doing a sports drama type project for a while, and this wasn’t that. tennis was at the center of the episode, but it was more of a conduit for the story than a true centerpiece. still, a lot of the filming was sports action scenes, something she hadn’t done a lot of before. luckily, she’s pretty good at tennis, even if she had a body double for some of the tennis scenes.
