❛ tessa as the dark one. ❜ In sacrificing her goodness to save the only mother she ever remembered, Tessa becomes the very thing she always feared she was: a monster. Gripped by the paranoia and thirst for power that has plagued every Dark One before her, Tessa’s magic runs rampant, and eventually she turns her avenging eyes on the very people she would have died to save, once upon a time.

─── summary: Evangeline has lived a heartbreaking life; her only saving grace comes in the form of the family she chose. Tessa has none of these things; no family, no past, and no one to claim her. Her only anchor? A ten-year-old boy who holds the key to her future. ─── warnings: canon-typical violence. ─── fic tag.
CHAPTER ONE ─── crown another (2.3k words.)
THIS WORLD WILL DISAPPEAR, like a blown-out flame. The notion occured to Evangeline years ago, when she was still a little girl, innocence fluttering in her smile. It had been a silly, passing after-thought, something simple and broken. Like the last thing you think of before sleep consumes you, and the first thing that crosses your mind in the haze of waking up.
As a child, she never took such thoughts too seriously. She would sit on a fallen tree branch at the edge of the woods and braid her hair, humming an old song she couldn't remember learning and paying little attention to the odd thoughts that passed her by. A vivid imagination summed up the strange things happening around her, the visions of young girls with dark hair that ran through her dreams, beautiful and not-quite-there.
Evangeline had paid no mind to these things, until she couldn't anymore.
So it makes sense, in a bitter, twisted kind of way, when one of the ebony-haired girls from her dreams lies in a glass coffin before her, skin pale as death. Their corner of the forest sits silently, as if the very birds are holding their breath. Snowflakes fall from a grim grey sky, melting in Evangeline's hair, and indeed, Snow has fallen.

CHAPTER THREE ─── leap of faith (4.1k words.)
A COLLEAGUE OF JOY'S ONCE CALLED HER INIMITABLE. She'd just finished stitching up the stomach of her cadaver in medical school, long after the instructor had told her he'd 'died' during their imaginary surgery.
Joy Watson didn't take no for an answer. Faster than the rest of her class, she'd successfully diagnosed the fake-patient's surgical complication and managed to rescue him from certain death, much to the chagrin of her instructor.
The point of the exercise had been to accept that sometimes, things happen that are outside of your control.
That day, her instructor had pulled her aside and called her inimitable. Judging by the sharp downturn of his mouth, he hadn't meant it as a compliment, but Joy rolls with the punches and she'd chosen to believe it was a good thing.
Much better than stubborn, anyway, which is the adjective most of her friends chose to use.

CHAPTER TWO ─── tired-eyed girl (3.5k words.)
HER HEART HAD CRACKED WIDE OPEN when she got the call, a wave of relief spilling out of her chest and flooding down Main Street. She'd only managed to catch the words "Henry's home" in her boss' usual clipped tone before the static in her head went haywire, and she'd taken off pounding down the road to the Mayor's house.
Tessa had spent half the day searching for Henry Mills. She'd walked him to the school bus that morning, same as always, but it had been lunchtime before his teacher called to say he'd never shown up to class.
She hadn't waited long enough to hear what sort of condition he was in; the thought of what might've happened to him settles in her stomach as she runs, a heavy, sickening feeling that is at odds with the fuzzy noise in her brain.
It's okay, her mind says, oddly comforting in a way that is familiar to her. All her life, when her lungs have buzzed with electricity and her veins seemed to fizz, her mind was always calm. He can't leave town.
She almost stops, screeching to a halt in the middle of the road. That thought feels strange.
