Brooke effortlessly weaves a bit of  lightheartedness  into their otherwise serious conversation.  Claire  was  family,  though  ---  certainly more  reliable  than her own  blood.   The grin that had formed drops suddenly.   Her fingers reach for Claire’s until they’re settled into a comfortable hold around her hand.

She’s quiet at first.   Her attention is swallowed by the pervasive New York City nightlife surrounding them,  but she's been wearing a  tipsy  grin ever since they were kicked out of the party.   She tips her head up,  wishing she could see the stars like they could at Brakebills,  but her eyes are only met with traffic lights and lit up billboards.   She's not entirely sober yet,  but the bubbling punch of  God  knows  what  started wearing off  ;  that's the thing about parties involving  MAGICIANS  —  she can never quite decipher what the  hell  she's ingesting  ( and she's mostly okay with that. )

She turns her head  just  enough  to share her smile with him.   They could have hailed a taxi by now,  but she’s enjoying the walk with their bodies side by side  ( a difficult feat with the heavily occupied walkways. )   The skin of their arms and hands brush every so often,  their  closeness  is  a  silent  confession.

❛  YOU  DON’T  HAVE  TO  BE  ANYONE.   That’s the  fun  of being immortal.   You can be the pretty,  popular girl one decade and on everyone’s  kill  list  the next.  ❜      She knows that’s not the answer Narcissa was looking for,  too shallow to be helpful,  but it’s the  deepest  she can go without bringing things up she’d rather keep  buried  —  like the fact that she doesn’t want to be a vampire in the first place  (  a recently turned witch probably wouldn't want to hear about  that.  )

      His skin is  pale  in contrast with the  rich  red  blood  seeping between his fingers as he presses firmly against the wound under his rib cage.   He doesn’t look up at her,  not that she’d  notice  ;  she’s too busy gaping at the blood loss staining his clothes  ( his favorite shirt ! ).   He’s in a lot of pain but he still remembers to be  embarrassed  he’s,  yet  again,  proved to be useless in a fight.
