even though yu does have an older brother , he’s always been given the most responsibilities . his older brother has cerebral palsy - a congenital disorder that affects his brain development , movement , & muscle tone . his brother is completely wheelchair-bound & hardly speaks . in fact , growing up with him was one of yu’s inspirations to become a pediatric doctor . though , due to his older brother needing assistance in his own daily life , all responsibilities of the oldest child always fell on yu’s shoulders ever since he was very young . he’s also just as overprotective of his older brother as he is of his younger siblings .

ＨＥＡＤＣＡＮＯＮ →   takashi toono’s backstory .

takashi grew up in an apartment with his mother , father , & older brother . his childhood was relatively normal , he had a lot of friends & he tried to do many sports , but wasn’t very good at any of them . he was very close to his older brother when they were kids , but given that he was six years older than him , his brother had his own life & tended to do his own thing by the time he reached high school .

when takashi was 9 years old , he went to bed one night only to be woken up by the sound of a thunderstorm & his mother screaming . when he got out of bed & snuck around at the doorway of the room he & his brother shared , he saw a police officer was at their door . the officer informed his parents that his older brother was in the passenger seat of a friend’s car , both were highly intoxicated , & the car crashed into a truck & veered off the road into a electrical post . both of them were pronounced dead on the scene . after his brother’s funeral , his mother fell into a deep depression & had to quit her job , his father started working more , & takashi didn’t know what to do with himself without his brother , constantly feeling guilty sleeping in the room they shared . this instilled a terrible fear of cars & thunderstorms within him , refusing to get a driver’s license & having anxiety attacks at the thought of even getting into a car or a bus ( airplanes & trains don’t seem to bother him , though ) . he also carried a fear of thunder with him .

when takashi was in high school , his mother had been in therapy for approximately a year before she started truly getting her life back together . he was incredibly proud of her , but was starting to feel like he wasn’t doing much to move on from the loss of his brother , instead just going through the motions of life without much of a goal . so , he decided that he wanted to go to a university on the other side of the country , since he knew his mother would be okay without him at home now . 

takashi found the yari-bu after befriending kyousuke , who kept telling him that the university highly recommended extracurricular to add to a resume . he decided on the photography club since , to him , it sounded like it would be easy . needless to say , he found out really quickly the true intentions of the club . to this day , even takashi isn’t entirely sure why he sticks around , other than an unconscious attachment to the people he eventually befriended there .

ＨＥＡＤＣＡＮＯＮ →   keiichi akemi’s backstory .

as a child , keiichi grew up around divorced parents - so two households , two bedrooms , two holidays , the works . at his father’s house , he always had a lot of fun . him & his father were very close , often spending time together going camping & fishing & the usual things that a son would want to do with his father . even if it was something keiichi wasn’t particularly into , he’d still have fun because he got to do it with his father who loved him unconditionally . 

his mother’s house was another story . there , he lived with her & his older sister . both of those women were very unstable & would regularly beat keiichi for doing so much as anything remotely wrong . because they were women , he felt like he couldn’t ever fight back . & as much as he loved & respected his father , that man was a bit of a coward & wouldn’t do anything to help . it put a strain on keiichi’s relationship with his father , but it made him considering doing some very awful things while he was at his mother’s house . though he knows he would never act upon the thoughts , he often thought about ways he’d hurt his mother & sister in return if he could . 

by the time he reached high school , he realized those thoughts were becoming more frequent , making it more difficult to focus on anything in school & even making him cold toward other females he went to school with . keiichi’s original plan was to not go to college & pursue a job at his father’s company instead . however , he started to feel like staying in his hometown would only make his relationship with all of his family worse , or even more dangerous , than it already was . thus , he decided to go to an all-boys university a few towns over , carrying his self-proclaimed hatred of women on his shoulders .

keiichi discovered the yari-bu after befriending the founder of the club in a shared class during his first year at mori-u. he agreed to join the club & became very involved with it , finally feeling like he had control or power over some aspect of his life . his dedication to the club eventually led to him assuming the role of club president after the original founder graduated .

ＨＥＡＤＣＡＮＯＮ →   kyousuke yaguchi’s backstory .

kyousuke as a child was your typical only child - arrogant & annoying . constantly wanting attention . constantly wanting people to notice him as if he didn’t get that enough . but most importantly , kyousuke wanted to be his cousin , yu .

when they were children , kyousuke & yu were always together , but yu was always the center of attention to all the neighborhood kids & the kids in school . yu was the kind one , the one always smiling - kyousuke wanted to be that person who garnered all that attention . he was naturally arrogant , narcissistic , & angry . but from a young age , he watched yu long enough to build his own facade of what he believed people wanted him to be so that he could make friends , have people pay him mind , & keep them around to stop him from feeling so alone . 

kyousuke became the innocent , charming , & cutesy person that people grew to knew him as . polite & always sunny in nature . bubbly , warm , adorable . & all of it was a big lie . internally , kyousuke judged people & ridiculed them but kept them around if they made him look good . more than anything , he became internally competitive with yu , wanting to steal the people he loved away from him so that he could feel like the more desired person for once in his life . but even with all of that pent-up resentment , kyousuke could never bring himself to hate yu . he loved him . simple as that . 

which was why he kept yu’s secret about being gay safe until he was ready to tell other people . it was why he recommended an all-boys university to him . & it was ultimately why kyousuke decided to tag along with him just as he had always done since they were kids . 

he found the yari-bu after takashi & yu joined . at first , he’d already known the nature of the club & simply became curious of the other club members there . eventually , once some of the other members discovered kyousuke’s true nature after , they’d convinced him that his true self was actually a desired trait for their clients . that desire solidified his membership with the club .

ＨＥＡＤＣＡＮＯＮ →   yu kashima’s backstory .

yu comes from a pretty big family - his mother , father , older brother , younger brother , & two younger sisters all living in the same household along with himself when he was a child . because of the number of kids in the house , it was very rare for his family to go out & do many things together , but it never mattered because they were all very tight-knit . money wasn’t easily spread around , but their love certainly was . yu believed he was the luckiest guy in the world to have such a loving & supportive family . 

except for the fact that his parents were strongly homophobic . 

religion was an important thing in their household , & being homosexual was strongly disbelieved among his parents . yu knew from a very young age that he was gay . as a kid , he loved hanging around the girls in his class , but never developed any crushes or anything on them - when he would notice himself grow very fond of some of the boys , so much as even getting nervous to be around them . the first person to ever know that he was gay was his cousin , kyousuke - who accepted him wholeheartedly & swore secrecy from his parents & siblings . when the two of them entered high school , kyousuke was the one who suggested yu go to mori-u for university , since it was an all-boys university & boys dating each other was much more common in schools without any girls . that idea alone thrilled yu , & pretty much solidified his choice .

yu was always interested in photography  & is quite good at it , too . so , when he saw that the school had an active photography club , he jumped on the idea of joining straight away - blissfully unaware that it was really the yari-bu . however , he was almost immediately infatuated with the other first-year that was joining , which was how he eventually became a true yari-bu member .

ＨＥＡＤＣＡＮＯＮ → itsuki shikatani’s backstory .

itsuki had been friends with shun ever since they were in nursery school . shun was always the athletic one , & itsuki was the smart one . they complimented each other all the time , when one would help the struggles the other had . shun was also the only kid in his school that knew that itsuki had two mothers , & he never once showed any ill will toward that fact . 

once they'd reached high school , itsuki started developing feelings for shun , mostly after shun woud constantly tell itsuki that he was " prettier than any of the girls in school . " itsuki took those compliments to heart , & believed that his feelings would be returned . he wanted shun to make the move first , though - which he thought was happening when shun was discussing going to the same university & rooming together . itsuki grew impatient & jumped shun one day , knocking him onto the ground of an empty classroom , pinning his hands above his head & kissing him hard . but , itsuki felt his heart drop into his stomach when he saw the terrified look on shun's face when he withdrew . other students witnessed the fiasco & pulled itsuki off shun . 

after parents were called into the faculty office to discuss why both their sons were suspended for " attacking each other " shun fabricated the story to say that the two of them were just roughhousing . reluctantly , itsuki agreed , but he was humiliated . shun barely talked to him the rest of their senior year , & itsuki decided to go to university on the other side of the country instead .

he helped the original president of the yari-bu form the club from the crumbling photography club that was threatened to be shut down , making him the co-founder of the club . the idea of a club where he could freely have sex with attractive men without emotions attached felt like what itsuki needed to break the lingering feelings he had for shun .
