I literally don’t understand thinking that Kylo Ren has had ANY character evolution through TFA and TLJ. He consistently does the exact same things, for the exact same reasons, in both movies. He’s the character with any actual screen time (so excluding cardboard Hux) who’s changed the least? And like JJ said after TLJ, if he has changed, it’s to get darker and solidify his (continuous, unchanging, static) choice to be a villain...?
Like misogynists are all over r*dd*t and twitter talking about how he’s such a ~dynamic protagonist~ and that’s why poor Daisy only ever gets fucking asked about someone else’s goddamn character in interviews, but like... Daisy gets asked about Adam’s character because of misogyny. And you can see on her face that she’s over it. If Adam can’t bother to show up and do press to answer his own questions about his character, it’s totally unfair for that burden to become Daisy’s responsibility to politely diminish her own role and do his work for him. If the actor for a character doesn’t show up, then questions about that character just shouldn’t get asked. Daisy doesn’t play Kylo fucking Ren, and Rey isn’t secondary to him or just some extension of his story.
His story so far in TFA and TLJ has gone “I want to be a villain, so I make villainous choices. I still want to be a villain, so I make more villainous choices.” It’s boring as fuck. And it’s a) not the arc of a protagonist in terms of being “the good guy” and b) not the arc of a protagonist in terms of not being static?
Rey, meanwhile, has abandoned her entire previous worldview and left her life behind even though she was really afraid, made her first friends and relationships and weighed out which are more valuable to her (and spoiler for TLJ: she didn’t fucking choose Kylo), learned about the ways that human beings can hurt each other and chosen to grow beyond being manipulated, discovered that she has the Force, seen more planets and environments and types of beings than she’d ever known existed, and decided to forge a new path for herself because the old plan she’d had for her life is no longer possible.
Stop fucking acting like Rey exists to be a side-plot to the story of Bennyboo Ren. He’s the adjacent character to HER story, not vice-versa. Take off your goddamn misogyny goggles and learn how to watch a movie starring a female character.
And then stop asking Daisy to do Adam’s job for him.
