QUESTIONNAIRE
What were you like as a child? And what did you want to be when you grew up?
He laughed at the question, his head shaking lightly. As if the world didn’t already know. Most of his childhood was in the public eye. “Embarrassing,” he joked. “I definitely, uh...didn’t know what I was doing, ever. I think I took the whole “do what makes you happy” thing way too seriously. Definitely wore a cape to school way longer than I should have. I will say, being a musician wasn’t my career plan as a kid. My mom was the musician in the family. I thought I’d be like a businessman. Not sure what kind of business I’d do. But I definitely remember dressing up in a kiddie tux and yelling stuff about needing a report on my desk by the end of the day.”
How was your home life? And how is your relationship with your family?
"I think it surprises some people when I say my home life was amazing and I’m super close to my mom. I think a lot of people assume child stars aren’t close with their parents because of this or that. Growing up, it was just my mom. Well, my mom and her friends from the orchestra. She’s an amazing violist, by the way. And I got to grow up basically backstage at every concert, which was amazing. I learned a lot about music from them. I don’t get to see all of my found family that much these days. But I see my mom probably once a month. I still hang out backstage at her concerts and she hangs out at mine.”
How did you begin your journey into this career path?
"Online,” he laughed. Very few people didn’t know how he began his life of stardom. “Music has always been a big part of my life and I would sing in talent shows or just make videos for fun. My mom would upload them on YouTube so her friends and my grandparents could log on and check them out whenever. Eventually they got the attention from someone in the music industry. And the rest was history.”
If you weren’t working in your current career, what would you be doing?
"I can’t imagine anything else. Like I said, music wasn’t really my plan. But after that first meeting with record producers, there wasn’t a single thing I could imagine doing instead. I put years of emotion and hard work into my music. Doing something else, impossible to think about.”
Do you believe in love at first sight?
"One hundred percent,” he answered, no hint of humor in his tone. “I’ve definitely experience love at first sight. Almost every day,” he added with a laugh. “No, really though, I do. But I am kind of a hopeless romantic so...”
What is something you want to do or plan to do that excites you?
"There is a lot I plan to do that excites me, both professionally and personally speaking. But right now, I think what I’m most excited about is going to New Zealand. I’ve never been. So, I’m excited to just take some times off and relax but also to go somewhere new. I’ve been on pretty much all of the travel websites trying to decide what I want to do while I’m there. Hopefully I’ll get to do at least half of the things on my list.”
What do you do in your free time?
He let out a deep breath as he thought about the question. “Free time? What’s that?” He joked, still trying to think of a legitimate response. “I don’t really have that much free time. It may seem like I do but I really don’t. When I do, I kind of do what pretty much anyone else would do. I go to the gym, I go to the beach, I go out with friends to dinner or the movies or the club. I like to take a couple of vacations a year, tick a few things off the ol’ bucket list. Just normal stuff.”
