though eric and aaron would never know it, the song that would become theirs had been with them from the start. on their first date, seated outside of a small cafe, the moody tones could be heard playing low through outdoor speakers. through catching up, nervous smiles, and hardy laughter, not a single note was heard, but it was there nonetheless.
months later, with a new job on the horizon, DC traffic was braved on the way to the airport, gridlock leaving just enough time for emotions to settle and for one of the two men to foolishly let a tear fall. it wasn’t a sad occasion, but the miles would without a doubt be felt they both knew as much, and so the display of sorrow went unmentioned, altogether ignored save for fingers lacing a little tighter where they laid entwined on the center console.
the car not moving meant that no breeze was flowing in through open windows, and although the late summer heat was nice, it was best taken in small doses. with the press of a button windows came to close, another press found AC turning on, and yet another would cause the radio to spring to life. as one song came to an end, another began, and by the time the second verse began ; they both knew.
the song was a promises ; in fact, it was a multitude of different promises a promise to never hold each other back. a promise to live life to the fullest. a promise to see all that could be seen in the short span that life allowed. but most of all, it was a promise to come home when all was said and done. their belonging to one another wasn’t a case of possessiveness , it was just a fact. birds belonged in the sky, fish in water, and eric and aaron belonged to each other . it had been that way since their souls were created, and would remain a fact until the universe blinked out of existence.
