ARWEN. have you seen Wake Up Dead Man yet bc i just watched it the other day and then again yesterday with my mom and ugh it's brilliant

yes i finally have and LOVED it- not as good imo as the first one but so original (i love how different all three films are) and so beautifully shot. give the lighting designer an oscar. josh o'connor, glenn close, and kerry washington in particular were acting their ASSES off and i remain deeply obsessed with blanc and his love for musical theatre, even if he was repping alw instead of sondheim in this one. also loved the callbacks to knives out (the sheriff got blanc's number through elliot!) and it's always a treat to see noah segan pop up. (was jgl in this one? i think i missed him if so. his "we have the nanny cam" cameo from the first one makes my mum lose it every time we watch it.) i think the actual mystery was the weakest of the three so far, but the character work with jud, blanc, and martha was so compelling that i didn't really mind. and i actually guessed who did it based on a really nerdy throwaway detail, which i was super proud of myself about, and i loved that rian johnson actually followed through with that detail and had it reflect the plot. he makes chekov proud. spoilers below the cut:

re the mystery being the weakest so far, i just wished we'd gotten a little more screen time for jeremy renner, which is a crazy sentence, but i wanted him to be a little more developed if he had such an integral role in the plot (even if martha was the mastermind). i feel that one of the reasons the first two work so well is that we really deeply get a sense of ransom and bron's motivations. i think a little more time with dr. nat would have been beneficial. also thought the pursuit of the diamond was a little cliche, but it was a very clear reference to a lot of golden age mysteries, so i don't really have complaints about it.

i did however guess that nat was involved based on the reading list from martha's book club, which is kind of horrifically nerdy of me, but all the mysteries on the list except for agatha christie's the murder of roger ackroyd had something glaringly obvious to do with the plot already (eg murder at the vicarage). and in roger ackroyd, spoiler warning, the doctor did it. it got me thinking and then i was right!!!
