I was reading a 2018 article on the New York Times and I’ve been very surprised to see the phrase “men’s soccer”.

I don’t think I had ever heard it before in my life, neither with soccer nor any other sport. Usually, men’s soccer is just “soccer”, even if women can’t participate it’s referred to as universal, and it’s only “women’s soccer” that needs to be called women’s because by “soccer” we all assume it’s the men’s one. Same with any other sport I can think of, really.

I’m going to start calling it “men’s football” too from now on.
