Lost mementos from my travels | A bar somewhere in Amsterdam. October, 2016.
A few years ago I walked into the training center and figured I'd try the flight attendant thing, thinking it was just a phase. I'd go some places, see some places, explore some places, and then maybe move on with my life.
But I haven't moved on... Champagne on the Eiffel Tower, hanging out at the gates of Buckingham Palace in London, a Guinness in the storehouse, cruising the canals of Amsterdam, crossing 26.2 miles off in Dublin, and roaming the corridors of Brussels.
I've learned to shove my face with snack mix seeing as it might be the only meal I get the day, that hiding in the bathrooms is sometimes the only time I can ignore the incessant call lights, de-icing can take 2 hours and then you may need to do it *again*, and that you sleep when you can, where you can.
There's a grave misconception about this job and lifestyle. By the photos it appears to be glamorous: foreign cities filled with memories some people spend a lifetime hoping to experience. What photos don't tell people are the birthdays and holidays we miss, the fact that sometimes we're happy to get a load of laundry done before we repack our bags and leave again, sometimes we are lucky to eat a full meal, that sometimes we hope for a full 8 hours of sleep. It's another hotel and another city and sometimes we are lucky to remember where we are for the night. It's cleaning things we don't want to clean and trying to appease 150 people while keeping a smile on your face. Missing another phone call from a friend while running through the concourse in Atlanta.
It can be extremely tiring, physically and emotionally draining, and superbly lonely. Yet, somewhere at 34,000 feet and all the miles in between you find yourself. You learn you are stronger than you were yesterday and that you can make it through whatever life throws at you.
And amidst the hotels and timezones, you'll realize as time is flying by and you can't believe it has been *this* long: you've been right where you're meant to be this entire time. (Even if you can't remember where you'll be sleeping that night.)
Happy work anniversary to me!
Oh, the places you'll go.🔺
Left London for a change & found myself in Christcurch.
