What do you think of Gemma Whelan as Asha/Yara? I thought she was great and that it was unfair that people were giving her flak for being 'ugly' instead of looking at her performance. Also, are you surprised that D&D went with her? I was almost certain they would cast some hot chick as Asha. Thanks!
Hi anon.
Ugh I’m so annoyed by people and their need to talk about the looks of an actress, instead of her performance. So annoyed!
Anyway...
Like I said for season 2 reviews, I don’t feel it’s fair to judge her performance by the little material there was from the character. And for what was there, I can only say, I didn’t find her good or bad. It was just an average performance, leaning towards some good, but brief moments.
I liked how she worked with Alfie Allen, but the show failed to bring the brother and sister relationship, and Asha’s trolling was poorly executed. So, I felt disappointed by the scenes between them, because it didn’t have the same feel as the books. If I was not a reader, I wouldn’t be able to say much else about their scenes. They were ok, but it wasn’t remarkable, or even memorable.
Casting wise, I don’t think she fits the mental image I had for the role. Not in physical terms, but in attitude, sass, or body language. I feel she doesn’t have certain qualities that made the character. And that’s not her fault, but that’s why I’m rather disappointed with the casting. Still, Asha's another character that suffers from the bad narrative, and bad writing symptom, so is hard to tell if she would have been better if there was actually something for her to do.
I find Asha a difficult character to cast, cause it can easily be performed as a cliche by any actress, so it definitely needed a tedious search. But, Yara, is a whole different thing! So maybe it’s me, cause I would have preferred the casting adapted to the book!character, instead of the show!character.
I feel bad for Gemma, cause I have no hopes for her character, and on the books, she was one of my favourites, which makes it even more hopeless.
Thanks!
what's your opinion on the casting of Asha?
Oh I really didn’t want anyone to ask me this to be perfectly honest, but I’m gonna answer.
When I first heard about that casting news I was happy, but I have to be honest to say I don’t know this actress’ work.
I guess from what we’ve seen so far she looks great cause she looks exactly like Theon. But that’s where all the greatness ends, cause I really don’t like what they did to the character. I pictured a fierce pirate chick, or at least when I was reading about Asha. Now that she’s Yara, is completely different. I don’t know if it’s the actress fault or is the producers’ for what they did to the character. And I’m gonna blame the producers, cause so far is not like Gemma had a lot to work with.
And finally I’m so disappointed with the Asha-Theon trolling. I’m talking about the horse ride when Theon arrives. It was ok on the show, but when you read the books you get this sensation of “OMFG, she’s his sister!!! TROLOLOLOL HBIC, I love her!!, and for the show that part was just ok.
But I think I’ll wait to see more of her to have a formed idea about her acting.
thanks for your question.
