winterfest came around and angela got to meet cecil’s parents, hana and taku. except she completely ignored everyone for her phone and didn’t even make it to the food.

          hana is not a sentimental creature. she is not built to be emotional, or sympathetic. the americans want jesmyn, but the russians want her too. sometimes it’s just easier for hana to let a loose end slip through the cracks and end up in the greedy hands of a third party. the americans will be angry, the russians will be angrier, but they’ll be relieved that neither opposing force has the upper hand. it is not out of pity (though there is a swell of it in her abdomen, which she promptly ignores) but, she assures herself, out of sheer necessity that she lowers the barrel of her gun. 

          in an accent that is neither here nor there, as though she hasn’t decided who she’ll be, just yet:  ‘ you’re a hard woman to find. ’
