Sometimes I think about how my Catholic school made a big show of supporting African communities affected by HIV/AIDS, but never acknowledged the gay men who died and were continuing to die less than 30 miles away. And I just sit there and contemplate the complete lack of compassion.
Telling us about how women were dying from a disease after they were violently raped was fine, showing us graphic images of emaciated African children was fine, but talking about the impact of the disease when it was spread through consensual sex was off limits.
